In Greek and Roman
mythology. Psyche was the
wife of Cupid, the god of love.
To the Greeks and Romans,
Psyche personified the soul.
To Carole Lawrence of
Jackson the myth of Psyche i
is fascinating and makes a
classy name for her eight
month old gray-and-black
striped kitten.
Psyche wears her name
well as she sits regally in the
window at Carole’s house
with all of the grace and'
posture befitting a goddess.
Does she really condescend
to all the squirrels and other
animals she observes from
her perch where she exists in
a carefully protected and
truly different environment?
Carole discounts this idea
saying that Psyche has been
mostly a lovable, playful
kitten since the day she was
given to Carole by a man on a
sidewalk in Atlanta.
“Psyche has many differ
ent moods and is very
gentle,” Carole said. “When
she’s happy, she purrs real
loud, but if she gets mad at
you, she will attack, though
non-violently,” Carole add
ed.
One of Psyche’s favorite
games is playing hide-and
seek with Carole. When
Carole hides, Psyche is fairly
successful in finding her and
sneaking up on her, or
Psyche will hide behind a
chair and jump out and grab
Carole around the ankles.
Psyche is aware that her
name pertains to the mind,
but she has no delusions
about staying in shape
physically. For physical
activity she runs the full
length of the house as fast as
she can. And to coordinate

Psyche has figured out how

Psyche diverges from the
typical feline personality in
that she seems to enjoy
“strangers” who might visit

Psyche perhaps this small

whether to remain aggres

For all of her atypical

alley cat Tom O’Malley.
Generally, she likes to eat
things off the floor, but one of
her favorite delicacies is
bugs, even dead ones.
But the conformity stops
with eating; even her
drinking habits are different.
Though she has a full bowl of
water, Psyche prefers to
drink water which has
collected in the bathtub after
the water has been turned
off.
If you think the character
described above enlivens the
Lawrence home, you’re
right. It does. And though she
reserves most of her affec
tion (and temporary mo
ments of frustration) for
Carole, Psyche also likes to
play with Carole’s sister
Cathy and is quite fond of
Mrs. Lawrence.

Gold , Frankincense
And Myrrh were the
Gifts of the Magi...
“And when they were come into the house, they saw
the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and
worshipped him: and when they had opened their treas
ures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankin
cense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11)
Of these three gifts, only gold is still today a familiar
and precious commodity. However, in the time of Christ,
both frankincense and myrrh were equally valuable and
well-known commodities, used in trade between the
Middle East and Mediterranean countries.
Gold, because of its rarity and beauty has been the
world’s most precious metal since its discovery more than
6,000 years ago. Then, as now, it served as a medium of
exchange, and was considered a symbol of wealth and
power. Because gold is soft and pliable, it was also used
for making fine jewelry and artifacts.
Both frankincense and myrrh are gum resins of trees,
which grow only near the monsoon regions of Ethiopia,
Somaliland and Southern Arabia.
Frankincense, which comes from a tree of the same
name belonging to the balsam family, is an aromatic gum

resin and was an important
ingredient of an incense
mixture used in Hebrew re
ligious rituals. It was also
used as an air purifier and
as a remedy for certain
physical ailments.
Myrrh is a fragrant, bit
ter-tasting gum resin ex
uded from any of several
shrubs, which grow in the
same sections as frankin
cense. It was used mainly as
a base for ancient cosmetics
and perfumes. It was also
used medically as a pain
killer and in mouthwash
mixtures. It is used in some
mouthwashes today. Myrrh
also was used in many reli
gious ceremonies.
Anyone who is curious
about these substances may
find them at The American
Museum of Natural History
in New York City. The Mu
seum usually features all
three treasures as part of
its December special ex
hibit.
