With Solar
Energy System
We've all used the heat of
the sun-to dry our clothes, to
bake mud pies, or to warm
ourselves up after a cold
swim. But using the sun to
heat our houses has not been
economically attractive until
the recent dramatic increase
in energy prices. And you
had better believe that
higher prices are here to
stay.
Using the sun for home and
hot water heating is called
solar heating. In anew
booklet called Solar Energy
and Your Home, the Depart
ment of Housing and Urban
Development explains what
this can mean to you and
how the different types of
solar heating systems work.
For a free copy of Solar
Energy and Your Home,
send a postcard to the
Consumer Information Cen
ter. Dept. 646 E, Pueblo,
Colorado 81009.
You have probably seen
information about panels
that go on your roof or in the
backyard called “solar col
lectors.” These are part of an
active system that collects
the heat, stores it, and then
with the help of pumps or
fans passes it on through
normal hot air or hot water
heating channels. Active
systems like this can often be
added to existing houses or
designed into new buildings
as long as they have a
southern exposure.
If you are planning anew
house, you might want to
consider a passive system
one that actually uses a wall
of the house to catch the heat
of the sun. This requires very
careful placement and con
struction of the house tp
retain the most heat possible.
If you are thinking about
adding solar space or hot
water heating, you should
also add insulation, weather
stripping, storm windows
and other energy conserving
features. This would be
helpful even if you don’t add
solar heating.
The biggest question right
now is cost. Depending on the
size and complexity of the
system you add, the size of
your house, and climatic
conditions, the price for a
solar heating and hot water
system can range from $5,000
to $20,000. In most parts of
the country, it is only an
economical alternative to
electric heat now. But as the
price of gas and oil go up,
solar heating will become an
attractive alternate source of
energy for heating your
home.

Home (free) is one of the
more than 200 selected

tions listed in the current
edition of the catalog,

Advice For
Owners of
New Appliances
by
Susan Millsap
Home Economist
Georgia Power
If you’re starting the new
year with anew major
appliance, be sure you learn
to use it correctly from the
start.
Many new appliance fea
tures have been introduced
over the past 15 years, so you
shouldn’t assume that your
new appliance works exactly
as your old one did. Read
carefully the manufacturer’s
instructions on proper use
and maintenance.
Remember, most major
appliances have a life
expectancy of 14 to 17 years,
so it’s best to do business
with a reputable dealer when
making such a purchase.
If you will be the principal
user of the new appliance,
you should be home when it is
installed. You may even
want to operate the ap
pliance once before the
installation crew leaves to be
certain it is working properly
and you understand how to
use it.
Don’t hesitate to ask
questions about anything you
don’t understand. If you have
questions the installers can
not answer, call the dealer or
the pow'er company.

The unit should be level on
the floor. Appliances such as
clothes washers or dryers
should be installed in a warm
area of the house, if possible.
In an unheated area, they
work harder, operate longer
and waste energy. Also,
appliances that use hot water
should be installed as close
as possible to the water
heater to minimize heat loss
in the piping.
If a problem develops right
away, don’t attempt to fix it
yourself. Any necessary
repairs probably are covered
by the warranty. You could
invalidate the warranty by
trying to repair the appliance
yourself.
Make sure other family
members understand how to
use the new appliance
correctly. Remember that a
shiny new appliance can
appear to be a fascinating
new toy to a youngster.
Instruct young children to
leave the appliance alone.

Georgia cattlemen are cau
tioned that the weather could
cause some cold stress to
young and newborn livestock.
Cattlemen are likely to be
feeding supplemental hay
throughout the month.
While some outdoor farm

above normal shower activity,
farmers should be able to get

wet weather.
Winter forage crops may

due to the continued cold.
