REMOVE MISTLETOE
FROM PECAN TREES
Pecan tree owners are
advised to prune their trees
at this time and to pay
attention to the amount of
mistletoe present in the
trees. During this dormant
season is the best time to
prune pecan trees. Mistletoe
should be removed from the
pecan trees because it will
take nutrients from the trees
and will weaken limbs so
breakage may occur.
How do you rid the pecan
tree of mistletoe? Climb the
tree and cut the mistletoe
from the tree. Cut several
feet below where the mistle
toe has invaded the limb.
AZALEA LEAF
DISCOLORATION
Azaleas, in some instances,
have dropped their leaves,
and this has caused many
gardeners to seek the cause.
Back in November and
December the lower leaves
of many azaleas turned red
to yellow and then dropped
from the plants.
Homeowners should not be
unduly alarmed about this.
This condition will not affect
flowering of the azaleas this
spring. As for what you can
do, there is nothing you can
do at this time. However,
there is something you can do
when October gets here. This
condition is related to a low
nitrogen level in the soil
during the fall months, so an
application of a fertilizer
containing nitrogen shoud
help. Apply this around the
first of October in north
Georgia and around the 15th
in south Georgia. You may
use the same fertilizer you
used in the spring and
summer.
LIQUID LIME?
Some liquid lime materials
being offered on the Georgia
market as substitutes for
agricultural limestone are
not what they are cracked up
to be, according to informa
tion I have received from
P.J. Bergeaux, Extension
agronomist and soils and
fertilizer specialist. Used at
rates suggested by the
manufacturers, these liquid
limes do not - in fact, cannot
- materially change the soil
pH, and thus correct soil
acidity problems. Neither do
they change calcium levels in
the soil. These facts were
borne out of research

conducted by an Extension
agronomist at Virginia Poly
technic Institute and State
University in Blacksburg.
The agronomist treated 15
different Virginia soils with
the recommended rate of
liquid lime -- two and one-half
gallons per acre. He collect
ed soil samples at one-month
intervals and analyzed them
for pH and calcium. The
material did not increase the
pH; in fact, it decreased
three and four months after
material was applied. Soil
calcium levels also de
creased from the initial
levels.
What this means is that
commerical farmers and
backyard gardeners should
beware of liquid lime
substitutes. Indications are
that they are mighty poor
substitutes indeed. Addition
al information about correct
amounts and kinds of lime is
available at the Butts County
Extension Office.

Candle Wax Stains
Several people have men
tioned that they have stain
problems left over from the
holiday season. Here again
are the steps for removing
candle wax:
-First scrape off all the
excess wax with a dull knife.
-Put paper towels under
and over the stain.
-Press with a warm iron.
Change the paper towels as
they get dirty.
-Treat any remaining spots
with cleaning fluid and then
launder the whole thing.
If you have already
laundered the cloth skip the
scraping step and try the
warm iron method to get out
the excess grease. Candlte
wax on carpeting is handled
in the same way except you
cannof put anything under
the carpet. Also in using the
warm iron method to remove
wax stains from carpet be
sure the iron setting is on a
low temperature!
Scissor Selection and Use
There are many types and
sizes of scissors made
specifically for certain jobs.
Using the correct type of
scissors makes sewing easier
and more enjoyable. Cutting
shears are 8 to 10 inches long
and have a bent handle. The
bent handle lets you cut
faster and easier while the
fabric remains flat on a
table. Scissors about 6 inches
long with a sharp point are
handy for use at the sewing
machine. Small embroidery
scissors are not a sewing
must but are very useful.
They are great for trimming
threads and they are also
useful for ripping and
delicate detail. Select
shears and scissors that are
comfortable for you to use
and be sure you do not allow
them to become dull.
Glove Selection
Ladies and girls selecting
gloves this winter should
select them to blend with
coats and jackets in their
wardrobe. Color, style, and
material should all be
considered when selecting
gloves. Remember that
bright colored gloves empha
size the hands and cause the
hips to look wider. Choose
your color carefully. Glove
material should be thin
enough to be comfortable,
sturdy enough to be durable,
but soft and flexible. Linings
may be of fur, wool, or other
fabrics. Mainly, when select
ing gloves let your wardrobe
and your life style be your
guides.
SEWING CLASSES
Several people have, ex
pressed an interest in sewing
classes featuring basic tech
niques such as setting in
sleeves, putting in a zipper
and other problems for the
“not-so-experienced” seam
stress. Arrangements have
been made to use the Home
Economics lab at the
Henderson Jr. High School on
Monday nights from 7 to 9
p.m. IF at least 10 ladies call
our office to pre-register,
classes will be held January
31 thru February 28. The
class will meet five (5)
Monday nights. Although
there is no charge for classes
sponsored by the Cooperative
Extension Service partici
pants will have to purchase
their own sewing supplies.
Even if you do not sew at all
but would like to learn call
the extension office today at
775-2601 to pre-register.
Ice Cream Splurge
Americans are eating
more ice cream than ever. It
is estimated each of us have
put away more than 15
quarts —on the average
last year. That’s a 6.5 per
cent increase over the pre
vious year. Ice cream has
three to four times more
fat and about 15 per cent
more calcium than plain
milk. The world’s ice cream
eating champion, according
to the Guiness Book of World
Records, is Ronald Long,
who on May 2, 1975, in North
Adams, Mass., ate 51 scoops
or,, eight pounds —of ice
cream in 12 minutes.

THE OPEN DOOR
Each year that passes
brings to all of us experi
ences of joy and sorrow,
shock, surprise and delight.
As we actively participate in
them we gain more wisdom
about life and its meaning.
We learn that life is dynamic
and that we are deeply alive.
As the old year dies, we
stop to remember the
blessings that have been ours
and the dreams that have
pointed the way to goals and
hopes. We remember the
little moments of beauty and
tenderness as well as the
tragedy and disappoint
ments.
However, let us turn our
faces toward the year that
has just been born with a
hope that will carry us
forward into the days ahead
with courage.
The words of Revelation
3:8 come to my mind as I
anticipate the year that we
have just entered into. “I
have set before thee an open
door, and no man can shut
it." God has opened the door
of this new year for us. There
are avenues of service for us
all. No matter how limited
we may think ourselves to be,
we can still be useful. Many
doors swing open as we walk
life's pathway. There is the
door of spiritual growth, the
door of higher thought, the
door of larger interest, the
door of good will. Ours is a
world plagued with bitter
ness and resentment. The
crying need of the day is for
people who claim to be
Christians to exercise good
will. The New Year is a time
when we can resolve to love
in sympathy and gentleness,
Jjjjii*
they
to bring comfort to the
sorrowing, understanding to
the preplexed and to live in
forgiveness and kindness.
Christ is constantly open
ing doors to us. But, we must
bear in mind that though He
opens the doors for us, He
cannot enter them for us No
one can compel us to enter.
If we refuse to enter we
simply shut the door of
possibility in our own faces.
No one can defeat us but
ourselves. "I have set before
thee an open door and no man
can shut it.” Hold this power
of His transformation in your
imagination. Think of what it
could do for you, your home,
your church, our town.
Sometimes it may seem
that doors have been shut.
However, we must always
bear in mind that God never
closes a door without raising
a window. God is no sadist
who delights in our dark
nights and cloudy days.
Jesus revealed God as a
loving Father actively in
volved in His world. He is
described as a Heavenly
Father. For Him to get His
way with most of us involves
a long process of closing
doors and raising windows.
Often when a door is closed it
seems to be an insult. But
God is saying in effect, “I
closed the door through
which you tried to go so that I
could guide you down life’s
pathway to the door which I
want you to go.” God closed
dungeon doors on John
Bunvan but at the same time
opened a window through
which the lives in Pilgirm’s
Progress flowed.
"Keep a brave spirit and
never despair
Hope brings you messages
through the air
God is victorious -
GOD is everywhere.”
