Seven area offices nation wide will open mid-February to handle most of this monitoring for the food stamp program’s new com pliance branch. “When retail stores sell ineligible items, they consti tute a threat to the integrity of the food stamp program,” said Food Stamp Program Director Nancy Snyder. Compliance officers will be working throughout the country to more effectively identify and penalize such violators. Compliance area offices will be located in New York City; Washington, D. C.; Butts Musicians To Compete For Metro High School Band WSB Radio and Trust Company Bank have an nounced competition for the selection of outstanding high school musicians of the 15-county Metro Atlanta area, to be named members of the 1977 METRO HIGH SCHOOL HONOR BAND. The Voice of the South, in cooperation with the Atlanta bank, will select 75 high school band members, with the panel of judges basing their decisions on musician ship, character, citizenship and scholastic achievement. It will be the second year for the recognition program, inaugurated in 1976 by Trust Company Bank and WSB as a unique way to recognize the high achievers in music during our nation’s Bicen tennial year. Announcement of the com petition is made jointly by Elmo Ellis, Vice President and General Manager of WSB Radio, and Champney A. McNair, President of Trust Company Bank. Entry deadline is midnight March 6. 1977. Letters announcing the content have gone out to the school principals and band directors in the 15 counties: Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Clay ton, Gwinnett, Cherokee, Douglas, Newton, Walton, Henry, Rockdale, Paulding, Forsyth, Fayette and Butts. Nominations are by the various high school and directors and also may be made by WSB Radio listen ers. Joseph M. Kirschner, As sistant Director of Music Education for the Fulton County School System, will serve as chairman of the panel of judges, which will also include: Bobby Jordan, LOCAL STUDENTS ON DEAN’S LIST AT GA. COLLEGE MILLEDGEVILLE The following students from Jackson have been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall Quarter, 1976 at Georgia College. Listing is released through the office of the academic Dean. Charlotte B. Beal, Connie D. Brown, June C. Maddox, Duane H. Patterson, and Andrew L. St. John. Atlanta, Ga.; Memphis, Tenn.; Chicago, 111.; Dallas, Tex.; and Oakland, Calif. “While we are making an effort to establish a more tightly monitored program through this branch, even one violation can affect a community,” said Mrs. Sny der. Suspected food stamp violations by authorized retailers will be reported to compliance officers by the food stamp field office. If stores are found selling ineligible items for food stamps, they face disqualifi cation from the program. If a cbmpliance review finds documented evidence of criminal activity, the case will be turned over to the Department’s Office of In vestigation. Recipients can legally buy any food or seeds and plants to grow food for their own use. They cannot use food stamps to buy nonfood items such as soap, pet food, tobacco, and liquor with food stamps. The program is adminis tered through USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, by each slate’s welfare agency. USDA officials say food stamps enable the 17 million low-income participants to buy more food of greater variety to improve their diets.
