FFA Banquet Held to Honor Chapter Members and Officers The Jackson chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) held its 26th annual parent and member banquet Thursday night, February 24, at The Central Georgia EMC auditorium. In addition to FFA mem bers and their parents, the banquet was attended by school officials and members of the county board of education. The FFA chapter present ed County Superintendent of Education J. M. L. Comer an honorary chapter Farmer Degree award for his more than 30 years of “loyal service to the school system in Butts County.” The president of the Jackson chapter and vice president of the state FFA organization, William Yancy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Yancy of the Worthville community, spoke at the banquet on “Agriculture’s New Generation.” Yancy cited the tremend ous advances in agricultural science and technology in recent yeans and noted that agribusiness, “Georgia’s largest industry,” accounts for three-fourths of the state’s natural resources and one-fifth of its retail trade. Four members of the Jackson FFA Chapter were presented Agricultural Proficiency Award Medals and certificates provided by the National FFA Founda tion, Inc. to recognize achievement of chapter members in classroom study and work experiences re lated to a career in the industry of agriculture. The Agricultural Electrifi cation Award went to Roger McDaniel, son of Mr. and Mrs. John McDaniel of Jackson, the Agricultural Mechanics Award to Troy Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Smith of Jackson, the Agricultural Sales and Ser vice Award to Bruce Ball, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ball of Jackson and the Forest Management Award to Diane Duke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Duke of Worthville. Other members receiving medals for achievement in their respective areas were Curtis Henderson (welding), Glen Williams (public speak ing) and Dawson Heath (tractor achievement). Richard Ledford received a plaque for his services as head advisor of the FFA chapter last year, and representatives from the Exchange Club and the Van Deventer Youth Center were given awards for helping to send representatives to the national FFA convention in Kansas City, Missouri, last year. Jhuzf/aSm HARDWARE STORES Last Rites Held Sunday For Mrs. Cook Mrs. Effie Johnson King Cook, 91, of Jackson, died Friday night at the Sylvan Grove Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born April 14,1885 in Butts County, she was daughter of the late Samuel Ervin Johnson and Bell Rosser Johnson, both of Butts County. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church. Survivors include five sons, John Irvin King, J. O. King, and Lamar King, all of Jackson; Franklin King of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Benjamin Lee King of Austell; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Baugh of Covington, Mrs. Nellie Enlow, Mrs. Effie Jewel Coleman, and Mrs. Willie Ruth Jones, all of Jackson; one sister, Mrs. Flossie Evans of Morrow; 38 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren ; 16 great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at three o’clock from the Second Baptist Church in Jackson with the Rev. James Burleson and Rev. A. L. Price officiating. Interment was in the Jenkinsburg Cemetery. Pallbearers were W. A. Cook, Wayne Byars, Marion Parker, Luther Byars, Gir den Cook, and Billy Singley. GRIFFIN TECH IS TAKING APPLICATIONS Griffin Tech’s spring quarter will begin on March 21,1977. Applications are still being taken. There are openings in most day ana evening programs.
