TELEVISION’S DISTORTED IMAGE OF SEX
Next week will be the week in which, we believe, millions
of television sets will be blank. As we wrote in an earlier
column, next week is Turn The Television Off Week
(TTTOW). We have asked that concerned citizens and groups
join us in observing February 27 - March 5 as TTTOW to
protest the excessive violence and distorted image of sex
presented on the tube.
Since we began our efforts, we have been absolutely
thrilled at the results. From all across the country have come
notes of support and encouragement. We have no idea the
number of churches, civic groups, synagogues, and PTA’s
which have been supporting TTTOW. But we believe that it
will run into the hundreds, possibly thousands.
When we began our efforts we had some knowledge as to
the amount of violence on television. But, as far as we could
find out, no study had ever been made concerning the amount
of image of sex presented on prime-time television. So we
decided to do a survey in our church. Twenty three (23)
adults volunteered and all three networks were monitored
during the prime-time telecasts. We did this the week of
January 30 - February 5. We were astounded by the results.
We found that 54 percent of all prime-time networkshows
had sexual content, that 41 percent of all prime-time network
shows had either sexual content and-or profanity.
Our survey also showed that when sex was presented or
suggested on television, it was a 9-1 ratio in favor of outside
marriage as opposed to inside marriage. There were, in the
opinion of those who did the research, 21 sex-oriented ads.
This was probably just a typical week for the networks.
Viewers could take their choice of four rapes on the NBC
Saturday movie, illicit affairs and premarital sex on the CBS
Executive Suite, a story about porno film making on the CBS
The Andros Target, or homosexual rape on the CBS
Wednesday movie. And sliced in between was a liberal array
of sexual activity and comments.
When these facts are added to what we already knew
concerning the amount of violence on the tube, it is enough to
cause any person who cares about the moral direction of our
country to be concerned.
So I’m asking you to join me next week in turning the
television off. And, to let your displeasure with the type
programming coming into our homes be known, I’m asking
you to join in with others on Monday, February 28, in calling
your television stations and expressing your displeasure.
Call each station which serves you. Even if it is
long-distance, it will be one of the best 50 cents you ever
spent. Churches and other groups are asked to publish the
names and phone numbers of the stations serving them and
encourage their members to call.
Concerned people must join together and speak out. Let’s
pass on to our children, and their children, and to untold
generations yet unborn the same rich heritage which our
forefathers have passed on to us.
Let’s act! Let’s act together. And let’s act now!
