MET AT HOME OF
MRS. FRANK MOORE
The regular monthly meet
ing of the Towaliga Com
munity Club met Wednesday
afternoon, March 9th, at 2:30
o’clock at the home of Mrs.
Carolyn Moore with Mrs.
Thelma Smith wick and Mrs.
Mary Washington as co
hostesses. The beautiful
home was decorated
throughout with spring
flowers.
Mrs. Mary Parrish, presi
dent, opened the meeting and
welcomed 14 members and
three visitors.
Mrs. Anne Cochran gave
an inspiring devotional taken
from Malachi 6:1-8. After
wards Mr. Thomas J. Woods
and Mrs. Carol Weaver were
welcomed. They showed
slides on the Butts County
Beautification program.
Everyone learned much
from the county’s efforts and
should be proud of so much
accomplished.
Mrs. Parrish read a poem
on “Friendship” and com
mittees were appointed to
remember shut-ins for the
coming Easter season. Sev
eral get-well cards were sent
to those on the “Flu” list.
Mrs. Myra Smith led the
group in several contests and
games. During the social
hour delicious chicken salad
sandwiches, cookies, mints,
nuts and coffee were served
by the hostesses.
The April meeting will be
held at the home of Mrs.
Gladys Patrick.
HAWTHORNE CLUB
MET AT HOME OF
MRS. GLADYS WILSON
The Hawthorne Garden
Club meeting for March was
held at the home of Mrs.
Gladys Wilson. Hostesses
were Mrs. Wilson, Mrs.
Hannah Cook, and Mrs. Dora
Maddox, Fifteen members
were present.
The devotional was given
by Mrs. Bailey Jones. Mrs.
Ruth Greer brought a most
informative program on
“Violets.”
Following the business
meeting, presided over by
Mrs. Florence Harris, presi
dent, the hostesses served
delicious refreshments.
The April meeting will be
held at the home of Mrs. Lois
Coleman.

Hearn who represented the
William Mclntosh Chapter,
attended the annual State
Convention in Augusta,
March 8-10, and report a
most delightful time and a
most instructive time.
Every Chapter in the state
was represented with the
Regents present giving a
report.
Mrs. Joseph Bahin, State
Regent, presided at the
convention at which three
out-of-state Regents and
some of the national officers
were present. Presently
there are 101 chapters in the
state.
AARP WILL HEAR
REP. BILL JONES
The AARP Club meeting
will be held at the Second
Baptist Church Monday,
March 21, at 3 p.m. An
interesting program has
been planned and will feature
Representative Bill Jones
who will bring highlights of
the recent legislative as
sembly.

AT WEST GEORGIA

West Georgia College presi
dent, awarded degrees to 411
students in graduation exer
cises at the college on March
13th in the Health and
Physical Education Building.
Dr. Manning Pattillo, Jr.,
president of Oglethorpe Uni
versity in Atlanta, delivered
the commencement address
to 214 baccalaureate re
cipients, 192 graduate degree
recipients and five recipients
of the Associate of Science
degree.
Susan L. Luckie of Jackson
was among those receiving
degrees, hers being the M.
Ed. in Elementary Educa
tion.

Miss Carole Lawrence
spent the weekend in Atlanta
with Miss Nancy Settle,
student at Emory University
Law School. Miss Settle’s
sister. Mrs. Janie Smith of
Alabama, was also visiting
during the weekend.
Mrs. Celeste Lawrence
visited her mother, Mrs. W.
M. Faust, in Athens last
Sunday.

Miss Watkins Given Life Membership
In Garden Clubs of Georgia, Inc.
A highlight of the March
meeting of the Mimosa
Garden Club was the
honoring of Miss Georgie
Watkins with a life member
ship of The Garden Clubs of
Georgia, Inc. Mrs. Vincent
Jones gave the presentation
in the form of “This is your
Life.” She told of the many
projects Miss Watkins had
initiated in the club, among
them being the Flower Show
in connection with the Butts
County Fair.
Miss Watkins was instru
mental in having the Mimosa
Club federated with the
Garden Clubs of Georgia, a
requirement being high
standards of excellence. She
also set up workshops on
numerous occasions with
professionals who came to
Jackson and gave instruction
to the membership. Miss
Watkins and her sister, the
late Mrs. S. L. Austin,
attended many professional
classes by well known artists
in Atlanta.
Facilities at Miss Watkins’
home were made available to
club members; plant ma
terials and flowers, Which
other club members did not
have access to, were also
furnished by her. In other
words, she inspired the club
to a degree of excellence that

Norwood, drove over to
Jackson, Mississippi and
attended the wedding of Miss
Claire Ragan and Mr. Don
Hare, which was solemnized
at a Baptist church in
Jackson on Saturday, March
12th, at 2:00 o’clock. The
bride is the niece of Mrs.
O’Neal and Mrs. Martin. .

McDonough and Mrs. Jimmy
White were spend the day
guests Wednesday of Mrs. W.
L. White.
Miss Lunette Kitchens of
Atlanta spent the weekend
with her sister, Mrs. Madge
Holifield. Miss Kitchens,
Mrs. Holifield and Mr. and
Mrs. Orville Kitchens at
tended the wedding of a
nephew, Bert Kitchens, Jr.
The wedding took place
Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at The
Rock Church in Clayton
County.
The Young Married
Couples Class of Stark United
Methodist Church formed a
congenial group for dinner at
The Bonanza Restaurant in
Covington, Saturday night.
Guests of honor were Mr. and
Mrs. Donnie Thaxton. Those
present included Mr. and
Mrs. Horace Cawthon, Mr.
and Mrs. Harold McMichael,
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley
Maddox, Mr. and Mrs.
Herman Cawthon, Mr. and
they would not have ac
complished alone.
It is believed that this is the
only life membership in The
Garden Clubs of Georgia,
Inc. that has been granted in
Butts County.
Miss Watkins will be
presented at a luncheon in
April when the State Conven
tion convenes at Callaway
Gardens when life members
are formally recognized.
Many feel that this honor is
well merited and long
overdue.
The meeting was held at
the home of Mrs. J. J. Harris
with Mrs. Marlin Spencer,
Mrs. John Schroeder, Mrs.
Vincent Jones, and Mrs.
Martha Feely serving as
hostesses.
The outgoing president,
Mrs. H. M. Fletcher, pre
sented Mrs. Luke Weaver,
incoming president, with the
president’s pin.
New committees for the
year were anounced. Year
books, attractively done by
Mrs. Cecil Scarbrough, were
given to each member.
Mrs. W. J. Hart was
welcomed as anew member.
Mrs. Lou Moelchert was
presented a gift for perfect
attendance and Mrs.
Fletcher received a gift as a
thank you for serving as
president for the past two
years.

week as a patient at Sylvan
Grove Hospital. She was
dismissed Friday and is
convalescing at her home.

Jenkins were honor guests at
a delightful dinner party on
Friday night at the Village
Inn in Porterdale. Rev. and
Mrs. Jenkins will be moving
to Moultrie in about two
weeks and the dinner was a
“sort of” going away party.

has presented the DAR with
17th Century Parchments of
Homes to be used in the Von
Steuben Restoration.
These parchments were
sent by Mrs. Frank Hawkins,
daughter of Mrs. Redman, of
Bergenfield, New Jersey,
and Mrs. Joan Thoms of
Ridgewood, New Jersey.
Mrs. Thoms is chairman of
the Restoration Committee.
