WILLIAM BURNS AND GOOD FRIEND ‘UGLY'
Shoe Shop Is Haven for Down-at-Heel Canines

Butts Mutts Find
Dogs' Best Friend
By CHARLES SALTER
Journal Slate Editor
JACKSON, Ga. lf the canines in Butts County could
vote, they very likely would select William J. Burns as a
dog’s best friend.
Burns, 61, operator of a shoe shop in Jackson, grinned
and admitted, “I am a. sucker for a dog. I can’t stand to see
one go hungry or suffer.”
Mr. and Mrs. Burns have five German shepherds at their
Butts County home near Flovilla. At his shoe shop, four dogs
have taken up with him in the past 18 months, and another
pooch drops by occasionally for a friendly visit and a snack.
Anytime during the morning or afternoon, a customer is
almost certain to find Ugly, Blondie, Blacky and Lady sitting
or snoozing in front of the shop.
I could have sworn all for dogs smiled as they watched
me open the front door.
Two of the dogs were abandoned as puppies, and they
slept under the jail across the street until Rums started feed
ing them.
Burns had all ot me dogs inoculated against rabies, and
two of them have been spayed.
Ugly, a Yorkshire terrier, was wounded by someone with
a shotgun several weeks ago, and spent three weeks in an
animal hospital at Burns’ expense. Burns can’t understand
how anyone could be so cruel.
He put up a fence and built a doghouse behind the shop
so that the dogs would have a secure home at night.
Burns, of course, feeds the dogs daily, and so do other

folks who have become attached to the shoe shop’s welcom
ing committee.
“I got problems now,” said Burns. "One of the dogs
scratched a kid on the arm, so some woman told the police.
They told me I should make an effort to do something with
the dogs.
“I tried to get them a home. Everybody wants them, but
when it comes to the pinch, they don’t. The little one that
was shot has done cost me $45 already. I take care of ’em
just like my own.”
The food and medical costs have exceeded S2OO in the
past year and a half.
“The dogs walk all over town, and people pet them, and
they don’t bother nobody. One day a policeman toted Ugly
down the street in his arms.
“I asked the police not to shoot ’em. I said I would put
them to sleep instead. I have had dogs all my life, and I don’t
want to see one suffer."
When I asked Burns to identify the breeds of his four ca
nine friends, he said, “Ugly is a Yorkshire terrier, and the
others are just sooner dogs, stray dogs, mixed breeds.”
Burns seems particularly fond of Ugly, patting him on
the head and saying, “That’s the ugliest thing in Butts County
outside of me ”
He hopes that financial support can be found in the near
future to establish a humane society in Butts County, his No.
1 project for 1977.
“Some people don’t take care of no kind of animal,” he
said, shaking his head. “They hit ’em in the road to see how
far they can knock ’em.”
He was saddened some weeks ago to discover several
puppies were a* the point of starvation after being aban
doned.
“They couldn’t even lap up warm milk,” said Burns. “It
made you sick to look at ’em. Somebody put them out. If I’d
found out who done it, they’d have had to whoop me, friend.”
The puppies were in such bad condition that a veterinar
ian had no choice except to put them to sleep.

EAR CARE FOR
DOGS ANDCATS
Dogs and cats are born
with an acute sense of
hearing that is actually twice
as good as man’s. But ears
are a source of frequent
trouble for these pets, and it
is important to take special
care while grooming to keep
their ears as clean as
possible.
Dog and cat ears are very
sensitive; in fact, many pets
resist having their ears
touched at all. Normally,
however, if you speak in a
calm reassuring voice, your
pet will accept ear cleaning
as part of its normal
grooming routine.
Never poke or probe at
your pet’s ears, and never
wash the ears out with soap
and water. Instead, apply a
small amount of baby oil or
peroxide on cotton and wipe
only as far as you can without
stretching the tissue. Long
haired and floppy-eared dogs
will need more attention
more frequently, because
there is little air circulating
in their ears.
If the surface of your pet’s
ears appears dry, you might
wipe it gently with a mild
ointment to lubricate slight
ly. If the surface seems too
moist, a dusting with boric
acid powder might be
helpful. But you should go no
further. If either condition
persists, further treatment is
a matter for your veterina
rian.
If you suspect that your pet
has any kind of ear trouble,
the best thing to do is leave
the ear alone and call your
veterinarian. Many over
anxious owners probe too far
into their pet’s ears and may
permanently damage the ear
canal.
Some of the more obvious
symptoms indicate infection:
black caking around the
canal just inside the ear;
frequent shaking of the head
and pawing at the ear;
holding the head at a strange
angle so that you think your
pet has lost its wits; a strong
odor coming from the ear; or
heavy waxy material and
matted hair on the surface of
the ear. Do not use medica
tions or insecticides that
might be around the house.
Sometimes ear ailments
are caused by nothing more
than an insect bite, a minor
ulceration or a small pimple.
But even these minor
inflammations can upset
your dog or cat. Your pet can

become quite annoyed and
irritate the ear until both of
you become frantic and the
situation worsens.
Hematomas - swellings
that contain blood - some
times occur in the middle of
the skin of the ear flap. They
may result from a sharp blow
which ruptures the blood
vessels in the ear, or by your
pet’s scratching and shaking
his ear as a result of ear
inflammation or an infection.
Occasionally, dogs suffer
from otitis media, an
inflammation of the middle
ear. This condition comes
from an infection of the
external ear passage or the
nasal passage by way of the
eustachian tube - the tube
connectng the middle ear
with the upper part of the
throat. Common symptoms
are pain, fever, ear dis
charge and possible loss of
balance.
Often chronic ear irrita
tions are caused by mites
that settle in the ear.
Symptoms of this infection
are the same as for other ear
infections, prompt attention
to mites can give your pet
relief from misery.
Your pet can also be
irritated by something as
simple as too much wax in
the ear. It is best, regardless
of all the home remedies you
may see, to have your
veterinarian take a look. If
there is an accumulation of
wax in the ear, you may
cause serious damage by
attempting to dislodge it.
Remember that at the first
sign of ear discomfort, you
should take your pet to the
veterinarian. He will know
how to treat the various far
problems your dog or eat
might have. And he can
demonstrate proper ear care
for your pet so you can avoid
future problems

Upset
Dear Upset:
You are old enough to
make your own decisions
about the people you do
things with. However, since
your parents must still be
supporting you, it might be
wise to evaluate their wish
that you stop seeing Jim. I
don’t see anything wrong
with long hair for young men
and hopefully your parents
are in tune with the times
enough to know that long
hair doesn’t signify a “dir
ty” guy. If you don’t think
that your parents reasons
are solid, then sit down and
ask them to outline their
reasons for you. Perhaps
you can convince them the
relationship is good for you.
if indeed it is.

I live by myself in a large

everyone who enters is

one of my neighbors is a bit
weird but I can’t really con
firm my suspicions. I don’t
want to alarm anyone else
unless I can get positive
proof. This man lives four
doors down the hall from me
and it seems like he’s
always looking out his door
whenever I come in or leave
the building. I know you
could say that this is just
coincidence, but I don’t
think so. I have never seen
this man in the elevator, in
the laundry room or social
areas of the building. I have
checked with the people who
live near me and nobody
knows this man’s name. I
hate to have these suspi

man ought to be given the

I go about finding out a

Dear 007:
If the man is bothering
you simply by opening his
door. I’d hate to see you in a
city park! Seriously, how
ever, it might be wise to
check with the apartment
manager about your neigh

able to set your mind at rest,
or if there is something
fishy, the manager will be
qualified to handle it
through the proper channels.

IN APPRECIATION
We wish to take this method of personally
expressing our sincere appreciation to the utility
customers of the City of Jackson for their conduct
during the recent natural gas crisis.
The spirit of cooperation and compliance you
exhibited in turning down thermostats and using
alternate sources of heat helped make the task of
operating the City during these trying times much
easier.
During the spring and summer months, with this
crisis safely over, you might wish to consider
further cold-proofing your home by the addition of
more insulation, storm windows, or the possibility
of providing an alternate source of heat, should
natural gas be in short supply again next winter.
But once again thank you for the responsible
manner in which you met the natural gas crisis of
the 1976-77 winter.
