THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 1977
By Dale Whiten
Stuff was a teeny, little dog
with a shaggy coat made of
soft, white-and-black fur that
hung loosely over eyes that
peered curiously from under
neath.
He had a teeny, little bark,
which he hardly, if ever,
used because it was hard for
such a small dog of only 64
ounces to be heard above the
noise created by his father,
mother, brothers, sisters and
all the other companions of
the family.
Stuff wondered if he would
forever lead a life of
anonymity, if he would ever
have a house of his own with
his name carved above the
entrance or a personally
inscribed dish filled with food
he would not have to share
with so many relatives.
Not that he wouldn’t miss
his family if he ever moved
away, but every little dog
secretly dreams of the things
being an only dog can bring.
One day a young lady came
to Stuff’s house inquiring
about a puppy. The woman
said her name was Judy and
after carefully looking over
Stuff’s entire family, Stuff
suddenly found himself try
ing to sort out all the changes
that come with moving to a
different home.
Stuff’s new home was not
exactly as he had dreamed,
but it was almost as good.
There were so many new
places to explore he rarely
ran out of things to do. And if,
on occasion, he did get bored
there was always the trick of
chasing his tail which always
seemed to greatly amuse his
new owner.
One day during one of his
many explorations Stuff
came upon a funny looking
creature which, before he
knew it, he had caught in his
mouth and at which time his
new owner and all the other
people at his new home
suddenly began to cry,
“Stuff’s caught a lizard.”
They all implored Stuff to
let the lizard go, which he did
and the barely surviving

reptile scampered off only to
meet a more sure kind of fate
seconds later.
Stuff quickly learned to
like all the people at his new
home, and he would show
them his approval by
gleefully bounding up in their
laps and quickly planting a
kiss on the face before they
quite knew what was going
on.
And he didn’t really mind
that he didn’t have a house of
his own because now he slept
in this enormous room and
the floor was covered with
something soft and warm
which his owner called
“carpet” and which made a
really cozy bed.
However, this room did
present one problem when
Stuff wanted to get out. There
were some handbags hang
ing on the door and he would
tug persistently at them
trying to open the door and
just when it would seem he

Stuff liked growing up in
his new home. He liked all
the special attention such as
the time when he almost had
pneumonia and he was taken
to a regular vet and stayed
in a regular dog hospital for
three days. And he liked all of
the toys bought especially for
him.
Stuff, enormously pleased

happily in his big new house

course he wanted things to

teeny little barks or one of his
lightning quick kisses which
meant the end of a perfect
dog day.
