PET of the WEEK
By
Dab- Whiten
She lives in a trailer at the
bottom of a hill on Highway
42 just before you get to
Indian Springs State Park.
To passers-by, the place,
tucked in among the sur
rounding hills, would be
inconspicuous enough but
once you venture onto the
place of Mrs. Elizabeth
Craft, you think it would
probably be hard to find
another person in all of Butts
County who cares more
about their pets than she
does.
“You’ve really got a pet
when you've got a goat,” she
says, and she repeats this
sentiment often.
But goats are not her only
pets though their bleating
can be heard clearly above
the ducks, the Chinese geese
and the gander making a big
show of protecting the hen
sitting patiently on eight
large goose eggs in the
corner of the wire pen and
protected from the weather
by a large red sign which
once advertised Coca-Cola.
And there are the “banty”
chickens, some of which have
coloring like that of a stained
glass window, which scoot in
and out of various chicken
coops. Added to the barnyard
sounds is the miniature
crowing of the banty roosters
which strut around their
domain in their dress of
resplendent feathers which
drag the ground at sweeping
intervals.
You have to pass through
the menagerie of story-book
farm scenes before you get to
the goats, but you know
immediately they are Mrs.
Craft’s favorites.
The two big goats are milk
goats and the bigger one Mrs.
Craft calls Pam. The other
one is Ginger. Mrs. Craft
paid $125 for Pam, raised her
from a baby on a bottle, and
“love her just like a baby and
she would follow me around
like a child.”
Ginger was acquired dif
ferently—Mrs. Craft swapped
a lawn mower for her, but
she doesn’t dare let Ginger
eat just any kind of grass or
brush because that might
sour her milk and between
Pam and Ginger, Mrs. Craft
says she is now getting about
2' ■> gallons of milk a day.
A native of Fulton County,
Mrs. Craft operated a barber
shop in Union City for 15
years before moving to Butts
County in 1970.
To get their milk, we follow
Mrs. Craft into her barber
shop where you can still get a
haircut for a dollar and
where I eyed the razors and
scissors suspiciously as I had
already decided that this
experienced barber probably
thought I had gone too long
between haircuts.
Mrs. Craft says a doctor
put her on goat milk in 1934
and that she has drunk it ever
since. “I drink it, churn it
and make butter and butter
milk from it,” she remarks.
And as an aside she thought
fully observes, “I love my
goat milk-and poke salad.”
The butter Mrs. Craft
makes from the goat milk is
white and creamy and looks
a lot like cottage cheese, but
it has the rich smell of fresh
butter. And if she wants
yellow butter, she simply
adds cheese coloring to get
the yellow effect. Mrs. Craft
asserts that she can churn
three gallons of Pam’s milk
and get one pound of butter.
The baby goats-Carter and
Star (Carter is the bigger
one)-are both billy goats.
Mrs. Craft remarks that they
will be good for eating the
kudzu around her place and
the honeysuckle, the frag
rance of which permeates the
air and mixes with the
traditional sights and smells
of farm life.
But Carter and Star are
still babies and are treated
accordingly. It was about
4:30 in the afternoon-feeding
time for the baby goats.
In a room to the side of the
shop. Mrs. Craft began

preparing Carter and Star’s
milk almost as carefully as
you would a baby’s formula.
“When you’ve got a baby
goat, you’ve just got another
baby in the family. You can’t
give a baby goat cold
milk-that’ll give 'em colic,”
Mrs. Craft notes as she heats
the milk in two 16 ounce
Pepsi and Coca-Cola bottles
with black rubber nipples on
the ends.
Once the milk is heated, we
once again trespass on the
property of the protective
gander to deliver the milk to
Carter and Star. Mrs. Craft
explains that Carter was not
named after the President
but for an “old railroad engi
neer on the Southern Rail
road called Hoss and I used
to cut his hair.”
Carter and Star slurp their
milk hungrily and Mrs. Craft
reaches down and strokes the
head of Carter lovingly.
“Ain’t he got the longest,
prettiest ears you’ve ever
seen-but you better not pull
them-they don’t like that.
And you know these billy
goats are really going to be a
lot of help about eating the
brush around the place. But I
can’t let my milk goats eat
just anything. Azaleas, wild
cherries, larkspur or fox
glove-they’re all poison to
milk goats,” Mrs. Craft
explains.
She continued, “Last win
