Track Team Wins Medals At
Statewide and Area Meets
At the Headland B-Team
statewide relays held at
Headland High School in
Atlanta. April 20, Wally
Cawthon, a sophomore at
Jackson High, was voted the
outstanding performer in the
field events for the meet and
was presented a plaque
during the award cere
monies.
Thirty-nine schools were
represented at the meet in
which Cawthon placed first
in discus competition with
133’5” and second in the shot
put with 43’5%”.
Other members of the
Jackson team who earned
recognition with their per
formances were Carey Thax
ton who won first place in
pole vault competition with
an 11’6” performance and
Tony Stodghill who placed
third in discus with 119’9”
and fifth in the shot put with
39'H'’.
Also, Willie Ward came in
second in the 120 yard high
hurdle with 15.8 and placed
third in the triple jump with
40TArthur Pye placed fifth
in the 100 yard dash with 10.4.
The Jackson team as a
whole placed fifth in the
Headland Relays. Only 9th
and 10th grade students
participated in the meet.
On Friday, April 22, the
Jackson High 2-Mile Relay
Team traveled to Winder,
Georgia, to participate in the
Winder-Barrow Textile Clas
sic Relays and came up with
a record setting perform
ance.
After the relatively close
race for the first four laps,
Derrick Alexander put the
Red Devils out front for good.
The last two laps were not
even close as the Jackson
thin clads finished 60 yards
ahead of the second place
team, Cedar Shoals High of
Athens.
The other members of the
Jackson 2-Mile Relay Team
who participated in the
record-setting performance
were Randolph White, Mike
Upshaw, and Tony Head.
Others from Jackson High
who won medals at the
Winder Relays were Leon
Smith with a second place
vault of 12’6” and Wally
Cawthon with a fourth place
toss in the shot put of 46’2V2”.
The Jackson teams placed
fifth in the meet as a whole.
Twenty-three schools partici
pated in the Winder Relays.

RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE The Jackson
High 2-Mile Relay team broke the Winder-Barrow track
record last Friday when it participated in the
Winder-Barrow Textile Classic Relays. The team finished
60 yards ahead of second place Cedar Shoals of Athens.
