ELLIS & ALEXANDER 31K2 Elm Street, N. E. P.O. Box 247 Covington, Georgia 30209 5-12-4tp Notice GEORGIA, BUTTS CO. Notice is given that ANGELINE FAYE JAR RELL KIMBELL filed her Sons Follow Fathers Into Popular Ga. National Guard Mid-State Company *<**&, - :£ FATHER-SON TEAMS—Company A, 878th Engineer Battalion, Georgia National Guard, has four father-son teams among its members, who spend their guard duty at Jackson and Eatonton. Pictured above standing are the four senior members of the team, SFC Larry G. Manley, Sr., of Eatonton, left; and, from Jackson, CW3 Max I. The National Guard doesn’t particularly set out to recruit father-son teams, but you wouldn't know that by looking at Cos. A, 878th Engineer Battalion at Jack son and Eatonton. The one company has four. “I don’t know how we got so many,” says the com pany's commander, Cpt. Jackie Perry, “I guess the men just talked their sons into getting in.” Not so, say the fathers: SFC Walter Barnes of Jackson, CW3 Max I. Perdue of Flovilla, SFC Larry G. Manley Sr. of Eatonton, and SFC William L. Crum of Jackson. But, they add, psychology was employed. “When he was about that big,” says SFC Manley, holding his hand about two-feet from the ground, “I brought him a uniform from summer camp. Every year, I’d bring him a cap or fatigue uniform or something. He said then he was going to get in the Guard and he never changed his mind.” '' I have just always wanted to get in,” replies his son, SP4 Larry Manley Jr. of Eatonton. “I didn't ever even have to think about it.” The Manleys were the first father-son team in the unit. The son joined almost four years ago and the father, a State Department of Trans portation employe in Eaton ton, has been a member of the Guard for 27 years. SFC Crum, a 29-year Guard veteran, says the decision by his son, SP4 Jerry F. Crum, was strictly his own. “I didn’t talk him into it—a lot of fellas said I did—but he came in on his own.” He continues: “I knew there were going to be some hard days ahead and I didn’t want him to blame me for it.” The younger Crum says, and others agree, that it causes neither father nor son problems having the other in the unit. “It doesn’t make that much difference. Every body knows daddy’s here big deal.” SP4 Crum says he made petition to the Superior Court of said county on May 3,1977, for a change in Petitioner’s r name from ANGELINE FAYE JARRELL KIMBELL to ANGELINE FAYE JAR RELL, and notice is given to any interested party to appear in said matter in said court at 9:30 A.M. on June 10, 1977, at which time objec tions to the granting of the relief prayed for must be filed in said Court. This 9th day of May, 1977. ANGELINE FAYE JARRELL KIMBELL, Petitioner BANKS, LAMBDIN, WATSON & LINDSEY P. O. Box 6K Bartlesville, GA 30204 THURSDAY, MAY 12, 1977 the decision about three years ago because the engineering battalion pro vided training he wanted operating heavy equipment. “There’s no use going to school and paying when I could join the Guard and they would train me and pay me, too,” he says. “That’s right,” adds his father, “he's learning a trade right now.” CW3 Perdue, a member of the Guard for 28 years, says he asked his son, SP4 Scott Perdue of College Park, about getting in the unit, “but I didn't put any pressure on him—l just asked.” Young Perdue says he continues as a member of the unit although it is a 45-minute drive to attend weekend drills once a month. “I just like this unit.” PFC Daniel W. Barnes of Jackson says he joined the Guard “I guess for the training and the extra money.” His father, SFC Barnes, has been a Guard member for 21 years. The sons agree there are advantages to having fathers in their unit. One is that there is always an easy touch for extra money if they run short during annual summer train ing. Another is that it maintains the continuity of the unit. “Most of them have been together for a long time and are real good friends, so they stay together,” says young Crum. What’s more, SFC Manley says he has two other sons, ages 14 and 16, “and they are going to join as soon as they get old enough.” But they draw the line at father-daughter Guard teams. Manley, Crum and Perdue have daughters at or near Guard age and Man ley’s daughter has expressed interest. “I talked her out of it.” he says. “I told her to stay at the house.” The unit is among those from 25 towns and cities attending annual summer camp at Ft. Stewart, Ga., through May 7. Help keep our forest from smoking. Useyour ashtray. Don't be careless with the future Kwl _A Public Service of Thl* Nrwipaprr CoukS 6*. T he Ad vernung Council Perdue.
