If you want to make flowers from your yard or garden last longer after you cut them try the following suggestions. Gath er the flowers early in the morning. Cut the stems diagonally with a sharp knife and remove any foliage that will be in the water. Wash the container in boiling water and then put very hot water in it. Drop the stems in the hot water and let the flowers stand for several hours before making your arrange ment. Remember that un even numbers of flowers make the prettiest arrange ments. STORING WINTER GARMENTS If you have not prepared your winter clothes for storage you need to do this task soon. All clothes need to be cleaned before storage and some garments need special attention. Long and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Long and family. Mrs. D. T. Long and Mr. A. W. Long were dinner guests on Friday of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Caldwell of Macon. Visiting Mrs. Carl Funder burk and Mrs. Vivian Hightower during the week end were Mr. and Mrs. Johnson Funderburk, Jean nine and Tracy of Charles ton, S. C., Mr. and Mrs. Conner Dodson, Patty and Alice of Decatur and Mr. Cliff Funderburk of Jones boro. Mr. and Mrs. George Long of Forsyth visited on Satur day with Mrs. D. T. Long and family. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Anthony on Sunday were Mr. A. L. Anthony of Conyers, or placed in a fabric clothes bag for storage during the summer. These materials are porous and need to breathe, and sealed plastic bags will suffocate them. A down-filled jacket needs to breathe too so store it flat in a box, leaving some room around the jacket. You do not want to pack it tightly. Storing your clothes properly now will make you happy with the results when you unpack them next fall or winter. DID YOU KNOW??? -It is best not to keep fats and oils in partially filled containers. To eliminate air space, transfer to another container and the fats and oils will keep longer. -To keep eyes from watering while cutting onions, slice or cut them under cold, running water. Slice the onion from top rather than root end. -To keep from tearing the meringue when slicing pies, brush the sides of the knife with cooking oil before cutting. Burns of Macon. Mrs. Gaston Hester of Eu faula, Ala. was the weekend guest of Miss Virginia Smith and visited with her mother, Mrs. Edith Roberts. The second will be held on June 4th at Columbus College. The Georgia Wheelchair Sports and Recreation As sociation, Inc. has been organized to promote re creational and competitive activities for wheelchair users in Georgia. The purpose of the mini jamboree is to introduce a wide range of sports to persons who have a perm anent physical disability. Individuals 12 years of age or older are eligible to partici pate. The Georgia Depart ment of Natural Resources is a co-sponsor of the program and will provide information to interested parties. Carlton Waits. The Health Systems Agency is a private non profit corportion organized as a result of the “National Health Planning and Re sources Development Act of 1974’’ (P.L.93-641) and is responsible for planning, reviewing, and developing health resources, facilities, manpower and services within a 24-county area, including Butts County. Board members who are elected for threeyear terms, work to improve the health of residents in the area by increasing the accessibility, availability, acceptability, and continuity of health services provided. The Agen cy is attempting to restrain increases in the cost of providing health services, as well as work to prevent unnecessary duplication of health facilities, services, and other resources. Walker was chosen to represent Butts County on the 69-member Board which is comprised of a majority of consumers of health care who represent a cross section of the geographic, racial, and economic inter ests in the 24-county health service area. Asa consumer he will work with providers to achieve objectives that are in the best health delivery system interest for the entire region. THURSDAY, MAY 12, 1977 Unemployment Rate in Butts Down To 8.6 For the first time in many months, Butts County has given up the dubious honor of having the highest unemploy ment rate in the eight-county Mclntosh Trail AP&DC area. Butts County’s rate for March was only slightly lower at 8.6 per cent. The average rate for the eight counties making up the area planning and development commission was 6.6 per cent. Employment figures for Butts County in March showed a labor force with 5, 095, of which 4,657 were unemployed and 438 Unem ployed. Unemployment figures for other counties in the area were Henry County with 7.9 per cent; Spalding County 6.9 per cent ; Fayette County, 6.6 per cent; Lamar County, 6.5 per cent: Newton County 5.5 per cent and Upson County 4.7 per cent. Butts County’s unemploy ment trend has been steadily downward, although it has been as high as 10 per cent earlier this year.
