County’s Road Crew Receives Commendation The Butts County Board of Commissioners are in receipt of a letter commending the County’s road maintenance crew for its work on two proposed paving projects. Excerpts of the letter from Hugh A. Conger, Civil Engineer with the Depart ment of Transportation, is as follows: “This is to commend the County Road Maintenance Crew for the work they performed in preparing the above subject projects. An inspection this date shows the drainage to be adequate. Also the shoulders have been clipped so as to provide drainage away from the pavement. The work performed was very impor tant in preparation of the upcoming surface for these roads.” The projects referred to in Mr. Conger’s letter are the Old Bethel Road, presently being resurfaced, and the Jenkinsburg-High Falls Road, scheduled to be resurfaced at an early date. THURSDAY, MAY 26, 1977 JHS Athletes Win in State Track Meet In the state track meet, Georgia Olympics VI, held in Jefferson, May 20-21, four Jackson High athletes placed among the finalists in Class A competition. In discus competition, Wally Cawthon, a sopho more, placed fourth in the state as he threw the discus 145’9” to set anew school record. In another field event, Leon Smith, a junior, also placed fourth in pole vault with 12’6”. Smith had set a school record earlier in the season during a regiona’ meet with a vault of 14 feel. During the pole vault competition, a cover of clouds brought relief from the sweltering sun for the athletes and spectators as well but also some rather gusty winds which presented problems for the vaulters as the bar was moved up to the 13 foot mark. It was at the 13 foot mark that some mild excitement occurred as Headland High’s defending state champion Mike Moss vaulted to the outer side of the right standard and crashed to the ground. He was unhurt except for a sprained ankle and tied for second place. Odom of Headland placed first clear ing 136”. In running events, Ran dolph White, a senior, placed fifth in the 330 Intermediate Hurdles coming in at 40.7 seconds, and Tony Head, also a senior, set anew school record in the 880 Run with 2:01.6 to place sixth in the state. Several hundred competi tors from Class AAA, AA, A and B high schools partici pated in the two-day meet. Headland High School was the highest scoring Class A school in the meet, followed by Hawkinsville, Carrollton and Morgan County. Track: coach Tommy Carmichael noted that Jackson had previously beaten both Hawkinsville and Morgan County during regional meets. AARON G. OWENS IS PROMOTED TO ARMY SERGEANT Ft. Hood, Tex.
