Duffers Love
Drought At
Deer Trail
by
Johnny Smolka
Although it may sound like
it, it is not a part of my
weather report for the
weekly paper. You see, it all
amounts to this: We often
wonder what the folks in
Hawaii talk about from day
to day, since the weather
never changes.
But here in Jackson and
Butts County nobody knows
what’s gonna happen next.
With the passing of the worst
winter in history, an 88
degree reading in March,
just about the driest April on
record, etc. I am about to
reveal some of the finer
points of the current drought.
That is, before the evening of
May 20th. Golfers are
peculiar people and I should
know, I live with them from
day to day. Yes, on some
occasions you would think

Masters the way they talk
about their abilities. Then,
all of a sudden all Hades
breakes loose, if I may offer
my apologizes to the Clergy.
Here’s what actually hap
pened during the dry spell:
As you read in the last issue
of the paper Mack Davis had
an EAGLE on Number One
fyere at Deer Trail Golf Club,
and as the Interlocutor would
say, “That’s only the
Beginning.” So, here comes
David Fountain with an
EAGLE on Number Five (5)
and the few who have scored
that includes the Pro, Lorie
Mangham. Hold on now
folks, Donald Willard came
right behind David with an
Ace on Number Three, and
that, my friends is the envy
of a lot of golfers, a Hole in
One. Larry Biles got an
EAGLE Friday on Number
Six.
And so, with the ball rollin’
like it was, here came
another foursome and it
included a real conglomera
tion of the members of the
CLOTH. There was The
Reverend Phil DeMore,
pastor of the Jackson United
Methodist Church, the Re
verend Syd Whiteman, pas
tor of the Locust Grove
Methodist Church, the Re
verend Don Harp, who found
a little spare time to play golf
with some of his old friends
while he was conducting
Revival Services at the Stark
United Methodist Church and
the fourth member of the
group Park Newman.
Personally, I had no idea
what had occurred on the
Ninth Hole as I sat in the club
house, but I did observe that
the Reverend Syd Whiteman
came toward the final hole
prancin’ like a Tennessee
Walkin’ Horse, and in the
distance I could hear the Cry,

Pepper steak is a very
tasty dish, and a good way to
stretch meat. I used one New
York strip steak in this
recipe, and it yielded an
ample amount for two
people. Any kind of steak
would be fine, from round to
sirloin. If your family likes
onions and bell pepper, then
this is the recipe for you.
Boiling the pepper before
chopping makes the pepper
flavor less strong.
PEPPER STEAK
1 bell pepper
1 clove garlic
Vz pound beef steak
2 tablespoons soy sauce
3 spring onions
2 tablespoons oil
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons beef boullion
(canned soup)
Core the pepper and
remove the seeds. Put
pepper in a pan of cold water,
bring to a boil and drain. Cut
pepper into thin strips; chop
the onions; crush the garlic.
Heat the oil and fry the
vegetables for two minutes,
stirring all the time. Remove
from pan.
Cut the beef into thin strips
and fry in remaining oil for
three minutes, stirring to
brown all over. Add the
vegetables to the pan, mix
well. Mix the cornstarch with
a small amount of soy sauce
until the mixture makes a
smooth paste. Add remaining
ingredients (soysauce &
boullion) and add to meat
and vegetable mixture and
bring to a boil, stirring until
thickened.
Serve immediately over
white rice.

IN MEMORY
In sad but loving memory
of my husband, Olin Calvin
Singley, who passed away
May 28, 1975.
Two years I’ve trod this
road alone.
Sweet memories of you and
our life together still linger
on.
How much I’ve missed you
God only knows.
For death is a heartache
nothing can heal.
Memories are some things
no one can steal.
I hear your voice and feel
you near.
And know you watch over
me and hold me dear.
So I’ll trudge on here
knowing some day we will be
together again, never more
to part.
Lovingly remembered but
sadly missed by wife,
Mary Lois Singley

A BOY’S DREAM—The lakes and ponds around
Jackson seem to be teeming with big fish this Spring and
Dirk Harris recently landed one of those big ones. Dirk was
fishing at Avondale Mill pond Thursday with his
grandfather, John R. Maddox, when he caught this 4 lb. 2

but has never caught one this big before, said he was using a
black plastic worm when he hooked this one. He is the son of

INFORMER
“It’s only in my back” or,
“it’s only my neck” is often a
single complaint of patients
in the offices of Chiroprac
tors. So few realize that
functional and organic dis
orders are present with
every pain along the spine.
Chiropractic analysis, in
volved with the complex
nerve system, sees not so
much “what is wrong” but,
“what is not right”!
Thus, correction of “what
is not right” brings freedom
from pain, restoration of
proper nerve energy, return
to normal body function, plus
anew light on elimination or
improvement of health prob
lems.
