Stresses Wise
Electricity Use
When is the best time to
avoid using electricity unnec
essarily if you want to do
something about the national
energy problem?
From early afternoon to
early evening, on excessively
hot days. That was the
message interested consum
ers from the Central Georgia
Electric Membership Cor
poration received at a special
women’s symposium on
electricity in Atlanta on May
24.
The symposium, entitled
“Energy Matters Matter,”
was sponsored by Oglethorpe
Electric, electric power
supplier for 39 of Georgia’s
Electric Membership Cor
porations.
The symposium featured a
demonstration of the “Power
House,” a display that
emphasizes the need for
homemakers to practice
“shifting” their use of
electricity to periods of the
day when demand is not go
great—such as early morn
ing or later at night.
The Power House uses
certain key heavy-demand
appliances—air conditioner,
electric range, washer, and
electric dryer—to show
homemakers it is possible to
distribute their use of
electricity without eliminat
ing need and with a
minimum of inconvenience.
In this manner, consumers
can help keep the peak
demand for electricity from
getting out of hand, and
thereby creating a need for
additional costly generating
facilities. As demonstrated
by the Power House, wise use
of electricity is a simple
matter of rearranging the
home schedule.
Lieutenant Governor Zell
Miller, keynote speaker at
the symposium, told the
audience, “The women of
Georgia are one of the
greatest untapped resources
when it comes to the efficient
use of electricity. All of you
are to be commended for
expressing such a keen
interest in helping Georgia to
use its precious energy
resources wisely.”

Cookery

The hot weather is here
and it is time to make
home-made ice cream. This
week’s recipe is for chocolate
ice cream, which is good with
cake, cookies, or just by
itself. The ice cream be
comes more firm in the
churn if it is chilled
thoroughly before churning.
CHOCOLATE CUSTARD
ICE CREAM
1 Ti cups sugar
‘-i cup plain flour
‘.i teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
2 eggs, slightly beaten
3*2 blocks (3‘/2 ounces)
Hershey’s Baking Chocolate
broken into pieces
1 tablespoon vanilla
4 cups Half & Half
Combine sugar, flour and
salt in a saucepan. Stir in
milk; blend in eggs and add
baking chocolate. Cook over
low heat, stirring constantly,
until mixture boils; boil 1
minute. Mixture will resem
ble chocolate pudding. Cool.
Add vanilla and light cream
to cooled custard. Fill ice
cream container and chill.
Freeze in ice cream churn
after mixture ebills. Makes
about 4 quarts ice cream.
