HEARTWORMS
There are several parasitic
infections in dogs that are
spread by biting or sucking
insects like the mosquito.
Heartworm is one of these—
and is one of the most
serious.
Until recently, heartworm
was a major problem only in
tropical or semi-tropical
areas where mosquitos were
present all year. Today, dogs
infected with heartworms
during visits to warm
southern states are serving
as reservoirs of infection in
other parts of the country.
They are making heartworm
a national canine health
problem.
Dogs develop this disease
when they are bitten by a
mosquito carrying immature
worms, called microfilariae.
The microfilariae live in the
dog’s bloodstream and ma
ture into adult heartworms
four to nine inches long.
Heartworms become a threat
to your pet when the size and
number of the adult worms
interfere with the passage of
blood through the heart and
the operation of the heart’s
valves.
The best way to control the
heartworm problem is to
prevent its development.
Before the mosquito season
begins in your area, take
your dog to your veterinarian
for a heartworm checkup. If
your veterinarian finds no
heartworm larvae in the
dog’s blood sample, he or she
can prescribe a medication
containing diethylcarbama
zine. This is the safest, most
reliable prevention medica
tion for heartworms. It is
now available as anew
palatable tablet readily ac
cepted by most dogs. Added
to the dog’s food every day
during mosquito season, it
will kill the microfilariae
soon after they enter the
dog’s bloodstream.
If uncontrolled, heartworm
larvae live under the dog’s
skin for about three months
and then migrate to the heart
and large bloodvessels. Six to
eight months later, the adult

generation and free-swim
ming larvae appear in the
bloodstream. Mosquitos that
bite this dog also pick up the
larvae, starting the cycle
once again.
A dog carrying only a
small number of heartworms
may show no outward signs
of infection. However, as the
worms multiply, a number of
symptoms develop—easy fa
tigue, frequent cough, la
bored breathing, even faint
ing spells after exercise.
Symptoms vary greatly from
dog to dog, and may also
include itching and anemia.
If your dog does have
heartworms, the treatment is
in two parts. The first dose of
medication kills the adult
worms. Several weeks later,
a second drug is given to kill
the immature worms in the
bloodstream. Your veterina
rian will have specific
instructions for the care of
your pet during the treat
ment period. The most
important part of the care is
absolute rest and quiet so
that the masses of dying
worms do not form a clot in
the lungs or large blood
vessels. Your veterinarian
may also prescribe drugs to
reduce the inflammation and
infection, or to strengthen
your pet’s heart action
during this time.
Extermination of a large
population of heartworms
places a severe strain on the
dog and must be handled
slowly and carefully. Most
veterinarians, including my
self, prefer to prevent the
disease rather than treat it.
Get a Grip
A panhandler approached
a gentleman and asked for
a dime—for a cup of cof
fee, naturally. “Look at
you.’’ the unlikely prospect
snapped. “You sleep on
park benches, your clothes
are a mess, and you don't
even have ten cents for a
cup of coffee. Why don’t you
get a grip on yourself and
get a job?” “Get a job!”
the panhandler cried aloud.
“What for—to support a burn
like me?”
THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
Voices Out of the Past
Mr. Mike Plymale, fami
liarly called “Uncle Mike,”
is we suppose one of the
oldest men in Butts County.
He is 89 years old, and was
married in 1841,67 years ago.
He and his good wife are both
in good health, she being
able to do her domestic work,
and Uncle Mike still able to
look after his business
affairs.
He was in Jackson last
week looking as sprightly as
usual. He has but one trouble,
he can’t see very well, and he
has not taken a dose of
medicine in 50 years.
Certainly the lives of Uncle
Mike and his good wife are
remarkable ones. Where is
there another man who has
not taken a dose of medicine
for fifty years? It is very
probable that if everybody
were of Uncle Mike’s way of
thinking and doing, the fake
patent medicines would
cease duping the people and
the doctors would have
indeed a rocky road to
travel.—Editorial by Editor
Van Wilhite in the Butts
County Progress of January
16, 1908.
At Indian Springs, near
Wright’s Store, stands an
ante bellum mulberry tree.
Today my memory was
carried back to the scenes of
other years by looking upon
this old mulberry tree.
It was upon that tree that
Andy Johnson of Tennessee
was hung in effigy. He was
the only member of Congress
from the South who refused
to give up his seat and return
home when his state seceded
from the Union.
Excitement was at fever
pitch. A large flag was
stretched from the Collier
Hotel across the street to a
store on the opposite side. On
one side was the picture of a
huge rattlesnake under
scored, with large letters,
“Don’t Tread on Me.” On the
other side hung a large, full
grown cotton stalk with the
inscription, “Cotton Is
King.” On a public day, some
one had made an effigy of
Andy Johnson and hung him
on the mulberry tree with a
placard across his breast,
“Andy Johnson of Tennessee
- A Traitor to the South.”
Miss Sallie Carter, one of
the most popular young
ladies of Indian Springs at
that time, who lived in what
is now known as the Bryans
House, walked up with a

pistol in hand and shot him in
the face, late in the afternoon
just before the torch was
lighted and the effigy
destroyed.
On account of his loyalty to
the Union, and on account of
the persecution of his people,
Andy Johnson was nominat
ed for Vice President with
Lincoln, when Lincoln was
nominated for a second term,
was elected—and when Lin
coln was assassinated—be
came president.
His first acts were in
defence of the South. He
stood up against the radicals
who desired to confiscate the
lands of the South. He stood
up against all opposition in
defence of the people who
had whipped, persecuted and
burned him in effigy. For this
defence of the prostrate
South, he was impeached by
the House of Representatives
and tried by the Senate, and
came within one vote of
being convicted.—W. F.
Smith for the Butts County
Progress, July 2, 1908.
An exchange published the
story of a man who was
determined to commit sui
cide. Here it is:
“He went to a store and
purchased a rope, a cup of
oil, a box of matches, a dose
of arsenic, and a revolver. He
went down to the river and
pushed the boat from the
shore and waded to where a
limb hung over; saturated
his clothes with the coal oil;
lighted a match and set fire
to his clothing; took the dose
of arsenic; put the muzzle of
the revolver to his temple
and pulled the trigger. But
the bullet glanced and cut the
rope above him and he fell
kerflop into the river; the
water put the fire out, and he
got strangled and coughed up
the arsenic. He arose and
swam out and declared
himself a candidate for the
legislature.”—Butts County
Progress, Jan. 17, 1913.

High Blood
Pressure Is
Big Killer
“Everyone is susceptible
to high blood pressure and no
one knows why,” says Dr.
Joseph Wilber of the Georgia
Department of Human Re
sources (DHR). “More than
800,000 Georgians have high
blood pressure; 200,000 don’t
even know they have it. And
no more than one out of ten
keep their high blood
pressure under control.”
During May, High Blood
Pressure Month in Georgia.
DHR and the Georgia Heart
Association have joined
forces to identify and bring
this silent killer under
control. High blood pressure
can bring about stroke, heart
attack and kidney failure,
generally without warning.
It kills more than 20,000
Georgians each year, accord
ing to Wilber, who is also
president of the Georgia
Heart Association this year.
He says, “Georgia has one of
the highest rates of high
blood pressure in the
country.”
High blood pressure, also
called hypertension, is not
the same as nervous tension.
It is a physical condition of
strain on the heart and blood
vessels. A relaxed, easy
going person may also have
high blood pressure. Person
ality seems to have little to
do with the problem. High
blood pressure attacks any
one, especially those under 40
and over 70. Blacks are very
susceptible. No one condition
can explain all the causes of
high blood pressure. Emo
tion. diet, body chemistry,
smoking, environmental fac
tors and heredity are each
thought to play a role.
Wilber says, “High blood
pressure cannot be cured. It
must be treated for life by
proper diet and prescribed
medication, Since there is no
warning, the best way to
know if you have a high blood
pressure problem is to take a
quick, painless blood pres
sure test at your doctor’s
office or free at the county
health department.
