Voices Out of the Past
“Is there still a Dixie?”
asks Life in its “Dixie
Number.” Yes, there is still a
Dixie. A Dixie in the hearts of
some of the older ones, and in
that realms of the spirit
fancy may summon visions
of the most beautiful of
scenes, the loveliest faces
and days of cloudless blue!
Dixie, the East to which
those of us who stand on the
rim of the fading day turn in
devotion, while the shadows
creep. Dixie, the glory land
of the past, the golden bourne
of memory’s silent rambles,
the hallowed solitude in
whose cool depths the last
chords of life breathe their
music into the soul.
Dixie, Love’s shadowland,
people with the unfettered
spirits of the noble and the
great, redolent of memories
that do not die because they
cluster about things immor
tal, templed with the dream
fabrics of a nation that drew
from out God’s boundless
deep and, after four years of
romance, poetry and glory,
turned again home.
Dixie, the beautiful and
glorious, the sweetest chap
ter of history, the noblest
epic of the ages, the light of
the yesteryears whose ef
fulgence gilds the crest of
time’s swift onward tide.
Dixie, the stainless mother of
the nation, the indestructible
kingdom of the twilight -
Dixie, the incomparable
South of our dreams. Yes,
there still is a Dixie. - The
Jackson Progress-Argus,
July 11, 1919.
THE FINAL TEST
Don’t judge a man by his
clothes. God made one and
the tailor made the other.
Don’t judge a man by his
family, for Cain belonged to a
good family. Don’t judge a
man by the house he lives in,
for the lizard and the rat
often inhabit the grander
structures. When a man dies
they who survive him ask
what property there is left
behind; the angel who bends
over the dying form asks
what deeds he has sent
before him. - The Jackson
Progress-Argus, July 11,
1917.
Jackson Stray Club,
composed of M. S. Hendrick,
Y. A. Wright, J. G. Nutt, N.
R. McCord and J. C. McCord,
leaves Jackson on Monday
for a tour through the
northern counties of the
state. President is M. S.
Hendrick and N. R. McCord
is secretary-treasurer and
commissary.
One of the rules governing
the society upon its trip is the
following:
No pistols, playing cards or
whiskey shall be allowed in
any manner during said trip.
- Middle Georgia Argus,
July 7, 1881.
It has been suggested by
some of our citizens that the
depot at Indian Springs be
named Saunders’ depot in
honor of our oldest citizen,
Thomas J. Saunders, and
that the depot at Dublin be
named in honor of Samuel F.
Smith, for his zealous work
for the passage of the
railroad bill, under which
law the road is now being
built. - Middle Georgia
Argus, August 18, 1881.
Dr. J. H. Bryans contem
plates establishing a sheep
farm near Indian Springs, for
the purpose of supplying this
and other markets with
mutton and wool. He intends
to have a sufficient stock to
authorize the care of a
shepherd throughout the day
and plans to erect a
substantial corral to protect
them at night. - Middle
Georgia Argus, October 27,
1881.
HE CAME BACK
Governor Duval, of
Florida, was the son of a poor
Virginian, a stern, strong,
taciturn man. Asa boy, he
was a huge youth at fifteen.
At the cabin fire, at bed time,
according to the custom of
putting on a back log, the old
man said, between the whiffs
of his silent pipe,
“Tab, go out and bring in
that gum back log and put it
on the fire.”
Tab went out and surveyed
the log. He knew it was no use
explaining that it was too
heavy, nor prudent for him to
return without having it on
his shoulder.
His little sister passing,
was not surprised that he
requested her to bring out the
gun and powder horn, as a
possum or coon might have
passed, or the brother might
have seen bear sign. She
brought the gun and Tab
started.
He found the way through
the woods into Kentucky.
In 1791, after an absence of
eighteen years, he was
elected to Congress. A man of
immense size and strength,
he started for Washington,
going by the way of his old
home to see the folks who had
long since given him up for
dead.
Entering the little cabin
door near bed time, he saw
the identical gum log. He
shouldered it, pulled the
latch string and with his load
stood before the old man,
pipe in mouth, quiet as usual.
“Here is the gum back log,
father.”
“Well, you’ve been a long
time getting it - put it on the
fire and go to bed,” was the
reply. - Middle Georgia
Argus, November 3, 1881.

Importance
01 Exercise
Is Stressed
“Go outside and play. You
need the exercise.” How
many times have you heard
or said that? But, the point is
that maybe the grownups are
the ones who should be going
outside to play. If you take in
an extra 100 calories a day
over what you need, you’ll
find yourself 10 pounds
heavier at the end of a year.
That 100 calories, by the way,
is less than the calories in a
soda. Walk fast for twenty
minutes a day and you’ll
burn off the excess and feel
better too.
How to get the right
balance of exercise in your
weight control program is
discussed in a publication
from the President’s Council
on Physical Fitness and
Sports and the American
Medical Association. Includ
ed is a chart that shows the
calories used for various
activities. For your copy of
Exercise and Weight Control,

Consumer Information Cen
ter, Dept. 108 E, Pueblo,
Colorado 81009.
The problem is that most of
us don’t get enough activity
in our daily lives. What you
need to do is figure out how
you can change your routine
to add more activity. You can
add a regular exercise
schedule (perhaps calisthe
nics in the morning), jogging
or tennis in the evening on a 3
or 4 night or morning a week
basis. Or try getting off the
bus a few stops earlier, or
walking at lunch instead of
eating a heavy noon meal.
The important thing is to add
exercise that you really like.
If you enjoy jogging, then
you’re much more likely to
do it consistently and thus get
the most from your exercise
program. But remember,
increasing exercise doesn’t
give you license to increase
your food intake too. Step up
the exercise but keep your
diet well-balanced, and ca-

Besides helping you control
your weight, exercise will
firm muscles that might
have been weak and sagging.
You will feel more alert and
energetic. You will sleep
better and more restfully too.
And exercise is good for
mental health. The exhilara

participating in sports or
other activities help free you
of pent up anxieties and
frustrations.
The man or woman who
exercises regularly will
maintain a better state of

longer, and be more apt to
resist the degenerative di
