Hints Given
For Polluted
World Life
PCBs in mothers’ milk.
Lead in children’s blood.
Asbestos in workers’ lungs.
That’s life...?
Unfortunately, that’s what
far too many people have to
face for many years to come.
Some 100,000 deaths from
on-the-job pollution alone are
estimated to occur annually,
with 390,000 new cases of
illness reported each year.
Seventy to 90 percent of all
human cancers-to name just
one disease-can be traced to
substances in the environ
ment. And as much as 80
percent of all birth defects
are believed to be at least
partially due to the environ
ment.
What can you do about this
pervasive, poisonous pollu
tion?
Dr. David Rail, the
director of the U.S. National
Institute of Environmental
Health Science, was asked by
U.S. News & World Report
what advice he would give
people in their day-to-day
lives to reduce their suscept
ibility to any environment
related diseases.
Basically, Dr. Rail said,
you should live with modera
tion. Don’t eat only one kind
of food. That “one” may be
loaded with a toxic sub
stance. Spread the risk.
Use common sense. Don’t
jog alone a heavily-trafficked
street, for instance. You’re
far more vulnerable to air
pollution when you breathe at
a greater-than-normal rate.
And you shouldn’t smoke,
of course.
