FLOWER POWER:
Here’s How to Create Your Own
ATHENS—FIower power is
back in style.
Buds and blooms made
from delicate fabrics are
popping up on waistlines,
necklines, ear lobes and la
pels. Worn as accessories for
soft summer dresses, they’re a
natural.
But if the price tags seem
artificially high, don’t de
spair. According to a Uni
versity of Georgia fashion
expert, you can make your
own fabric flowers for pen
nies.
“The directions are sim
ple,” says Carolyn Joyner,
clothing specialist with the
Cooperative Extension Ser
vice. “You don’t need any
special equipment or skills.”
Ms. Joyner says the basic
materials are floral wire, tape
and leaves (found at florists’
shops or crafts stores), fusible
web (sold at sewing centers)
and fabric.
“Scout around the house
for fabric scraps, or use old
silk scarves and hand
kerchiefs,” she suggests.
To make a simple flower
from woven—not double
knit—fabric, begin by cutting
a pattern out of poster board
or heavy paper. The patterns
shown in the photograph
work nicely, but feel free to
alter the size or shape.
Next, place two layers of
fashion fabric wrong sides
together and sandwich one
layer of fusible web between
them. Fuse the fabric accord
ing to the instructions that
come with the web.
“The amount of fabric
depends on the size of the
flower,” Ms. Joyner says. All
three accessories shown in the
photograph were made from
a single, quarter-yard length
of 18-inch-wide fabric.
Lay your pattern on the
fabric and cut out three or
four pieces, depending on
how full you want the flower
to be. Using a large needle,
make two small holes in the
center of each fabric piece.
HEALTH TIP
From the American Medical
Association
VACATION HEALTH
The traditional summer
vacation of the American
family is highly recommend
ed by your doctor. The family
needs to get away from
customary home and office
chores, forget day-to-day
worries for a short time and
generally get rejuvenated
and ready to face another
year.
Whether your vacation will
be a short trip to a nearby
lake, camping out in a
national park, a plane trip
abroad, or what have you,
there are a few things to keep
in mind that will help avoid
having the holiday spoiled by
illness.
Depending on where you’re
going, you may need some
vaccination shots. Tetanus,
certainly for anyone who
expects to include some
out-of-doors activities. Ty
phoid, if your journey
includes areas where the
water supply is uncertain.
Ask your doctor about these,
and possibly other immuni
zations.

Design paper patterns (lower left) to make fabric flowers
Insert a three-inch length of
floral wire through one hole,
bend the wire into a “U” and
run it down through the
other hole.
After you attach the first
“petal” to the wire, coat the
inside center area of the fab
ric with white glue. Pleat and
shape the fabric to form a
tight flower center, and hold
the fabric in place with a
rubber band or paper clip
until the glue dries.
Follow the same procedure
with the remaining petals. If
you want to make a flower
from double-knit material,
simply whip-stitch the pieces
instead of using glue.
To turn the finished flower
into a lapel pin, wrap the wire
“stem” with floral tape and
add a couple of floral leaves.
Attach the flower to your
lapel with a corsage pin.
To make a necklace, buy a
yard of silky cording from a
fabric shop. Wrap the wire
with floral tape, position the
flower mid-way along the
cord and twist the wire
around the cording.
vacation diet. Many a family
trip has been spoiled by too
many roadside hamburgers
and soft drinks. A sound rule
while driving crosscountry is
to eat lightly. Be cautious
about heavy, rich meals,
particularly if you’re not
accustomed to such fare at
home.
Know what sort of climate
you will encounter at your
vacation spot and dress
accordingly. It can get cold
in the mountains at night,
even in midsummer. Good
walking shoes are important
to the travel wardrobe.
If you wear glasses, take
along an extra pair. Or at
least a copy of your
prescription. If you’re taking
a regular medication, make
certain of your supply before
you leave.
And, finally, don’t overdo
it. Almost no one other than a
trained athlete is ready for 36
holes of golf or five sets of
tennis under a broiling sun.
Schedule your vacation to.
allow daily rest periods. Do
most of the driving in the
morning hours and stop for
the day in early or
mid-afternoon.
Your vacation should be a
holiday for rest and relaxa
tion. It should not be a grind
that necessitates another
vacation to rest up from the
vacation.

end of the cording and a loop

If you want to wear flow

small pattern like the one
shown in the photograph.
Cover the wire with floral
tape and twist the wires
around the base of a dime
store hair comb. Add floral
leaves for the final touch.
To carry off the look,
make sure the flowers are in
proportion to your face and
figure.
“Wear small, compact
flowers if you’re petite. Tuck
larger flowers into long hair
and smaller flowers into short
hair,” Ms. Joyner advises.
And if you’re wearing a
blossom at your neck, don’t
clutter the look with flower
earrings or hair combs. A
little flower power goes a
long way.

b RESH TOMATOES—Despite the extremely hot and dry weather, M L Powell of
West 3rd Street in Jackson is now gathering large, ripe tomatoes from his vines which
include Big Boy. Better Boy, Rutgers, and Improved Rutgers. Powell said he planted the
tomato plants at different times so the maturity would be spread out over the summer. He
added that by having them staked and keeping them fertilized, he will probably have
tomatoes until fall.
Swimming Is
An Excellent
Body Builder
If you weigh 130, what is it
that can make you seem to
weigh only 13 pounds? If you
guessed being in water—
you're right! Water can let
you experience a loss of 90
percent of your weight
because of the lessening of
the power of gravity. What’s
the real worth of all this to
you?
Basically it means exercis
ing in water is a lot easier
than on the floor. How can
you go about using water
exercise for conditioning
your body is discussed and
illustrated in anew booklet
from the President's Council
on Physical Fitness and
Sports. For your copy of
Aqua Dynamics, send 75
cents to the Consumer
Information Center, Dept.

Swimming is a great way
to stay fit. It’s one of the best
physical exercises for people
of all ages, including the
handicapped. Submerging
the body in water automatic
ally increases circulation to
some extent. Water pressure
on the body also helps
promote deeper breathing.
With well-planned activity,
both circulation and deep
breathing increase even
more.
Before you get into the
water, be sure to do warm up
and conditioning and stretch
ing exercises to protect
yourself from injury and
discomfort.
And the pool you use
doesn’t need to be especially
big. One of the best exercises
only takes waist-to-chest
deep water. It’s called
THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1#77
bobbing.
Here’s how you begin
bobbing. Take a deep breath.
Raise your knees and let your
body submerge until your
feet touch the bottom. Exhale
while you are under water.
Push off the bottom and
return to standing position.
That’s all it takes.
The booklet tells about lots
of other methods to make
bobbing more interesting.
And when you get really
good, you can get into high
bobbing, which takes water a
foot or two over your head.
If you have access to a
larger pool, lap swimming is
terrific exercise. After
you’ve dono your out-of-pool
warmups, just get in the pool
and take off—enjoy swim
ming until you feel winded.
Ease off by loafing with a
lazy breast or side stroke
until you feel recovered, then
go again. As you build up
your endurance, you’ll be
able to increase the number
of lengths you can do without
stopping. Another way to
begin a swimming fitness
program is to swim one
length of the pool, get out,
walk back, and repeat a
number of times.
An easy way to start
exercising in the water is to
jog in place. Stand with your
arms bent in running
position, and jog in place in
the water.
As with any exercise
program, before you get
started, be sure to have your
doctor check you over.

Tools you . use to make

Ladders, wrenches, crow
