Bursitis, says the Ameri can Medical Association, means inflammation of a lubricating sac about a joint. The sac, called a bursa, is similar to a collapsed balloon with some fluid inside. It is located at various places in the body where joints or tissues touch and rub, and without cushioning there would be friction. Bursitis can hit at many points in the body, but most often occurs in the shoulder, knee or elbow. In most cases bursitis follows unaccustomed strain or overuse of an extremity. By taking a little time to work up to your physical condition, and especially by working up the muscles that you plan to use in any repetitious motion outside your normal activity (strengthening your wrist and arm before starting to paint the house, for instance) you can probably keep clear of this common and painful ailment. If you get bursitis, no one need suggest that you see a doctor. The pain is so acute that you will be the first to seek relief. In recent years, science has learned much about bursitis, and there is much your doctor can do to relieve the pain and promote healing. One of the main stays in treatment is a mild pain killer. Cortisone-type drugs have been used with some success. Heat treat ments also have their place in bursitis therapy. A treatment long used in this painful ailment is complete rest in bed. Anything that w ill lessen the chance of the afflicted joint being moved w ill ease the pain and speed healing. Like any other bearings, your bursae stay trouble free much longer if you warm them up slowly and let them get fully lubricated before >ou race the motor. If it’s your first, you’ll probably have more ques tions now than any other time in your life. And even if you've had a baby before, you’re bound to have a few new questions. How much weight should you gain? Why do you feel so tired? What should you watch out for between checkups? What will happen when you get to the hospital? These questions and others are answered in a publication from the Department of Health, Education and Wel fare. Prenatal Care tells how to maintain good general health during pregnancy, what to look for between checkups with your doctor, and how to handle common health complaints, such as nausea, fatigue and back ache. For your copy of Prenatal Care, send $1.05 to the Consumer Information Center, Dept. 121 E, Pueblo, Colorado 81009. Here are some interesting facts about pregnancy: Mothers who smoke have a greater chance of having a baby with a low birth weight. If you do smoke, try to cut down on the number of cigarettes. Varicose veins are an enlargement of your veins, usually occuring in the lower leg. Frequently these vari cose veins will get smaller and disappear during the first few weeks after you have your baby. Try to avoid tight clothing. If possible, try not to stand in one place for a long period of time. Sit down and put your feet up occasionally. During pregnancy do not take any drugs or medicines —not even an aspirin—unless prescribed by your doctor. Many drugs can pass through your body to your baby and can have a harmful effect. Between checkups, you should be aware of first warning signs of complica tions. Immediate care from your doctor can help prevent serious problems. Some early warning signs include: bleeding, no matter how slight; swelling or puffiness ol your face or hands and sudden extreme weight gain; severe, continuous head ache; or dimness, blurring of vision, or flashes of light before your eyes. Visit your doctor or health clinic early! Early and continuous care helps pre vent serious illness for both you and your baby. Prenatal Care ($1.05) is one of more than 200 selected publications listed in the Consumer Information Cata log, published quarterly by the Consumer Information Center of the General Services Administration. Gardener on Right Track When He Mulches Plants ATHENS—AII that pine straw spread around those flowers next door wasn’t put there just to look pretty. Your neighbor put it there for more important reasons— mainly for sustaining the life of the plant. He’s doing some thing more gardeners should be doing. Mulching. Gerald Smith, horticul turist with the Cooperative Extension Service, says some gardeners don’t realize just how beneficial mulching is. Simply by spreading two or three inches of material, like pine straw, around the base of the plants, you can reduce weed seed germina tion, prevent crusting of the soil surface, and moderate soil temperatures. “But most importantly,” says Smith, “mulching re duces loss of moisture from the soil.” Georgia gardeners should be doing more mulching for just that reason. Many flow ers and shrubs in Georgia are injured because of an uneven moisture supply. Applying a mulch from April to October, when most of the dry periods occur, will help prevent in jury. Mulches are especially ben eficial to trees and shrubs recently transplanted, and to August 9 Is 4-H Day At Six Flags The Butts County Exten sion Service is happy to announce that August 9th has been declared 4-H Day at Six Flags. Millard Daniel, Coun ty Extension Chairman, and Patricia Smith, County Ex tension Agent, invite all Butts County 4-H’ers to sign up to attend the fun and festivities as part of the Butts County delegation. It will be necessary for at least 25 club members to sign up in order to get a group rate on tickets. Club members interested in attending must pay for their ticket by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 25th. Plants with shallow roots that need a lot of water, like the azalea, would also benefit from a mulch. Other benefits are reducing soil temperature in summer, and protecting shallow roots from cold injury in winter. Still another plus is you don’t have to remove and replace a mulch each year. To fertilize shrubs, just scatter fertilizer over the mulch and water it in. But don’t get carried away. Too much mulching can hurt plants. If the material is six to twelve inches deep after settl ing, the plants could suffer root injury from excessive soil moisture and poor aera tion. Also, Smith says not to use mulches where the soil tends to remain wet. This will only aggravate the condition. The favorite mulching material in Georgia is pine straw. Some others you can use are sawdust, gravel, fall leaves, grass clippings, peanut hulls, wood chips, pecan shells, peat moss, straw, plas tic film and pine bark. For more information on mulching, ask your county Extension agent for the pamphlet, “Mulching Orna mentals.” office must know exactly how many people are planning to go so that group rate tickets can be purchased. There will be a 4-H Talent Contest held during 4-H Day at Six Flags. Prizes will be awarded in Cloverleaf, Jun ior and Senior categories with boys and girls compet ing together. Group entries will be accepted and will compete in the category of its oldest performer. Time limit for all groups or individuals is five minutes. Any 4-H Club member interested in parti cipating is requested to contact the Extension office before July 20. Assuming that at least 25 club members sign up, the group will leave from the A&P parking lot in Jackson at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 9. The group will return to the same parking lot at approximately 7:30 p.m. Yes Sir Guest to bellboy: “Please run up to room 514 and see if I left my razor in the bathroom. I’m in a hurry to get to the airport.” A few minutes later, the young man returned, slightly out of breath, and reported: “Yes sir, you’re razor’s in that bathroom.”
