Smolka
On Golf
By

You can rest assured there
are no strangers on a golf
course. Not only are there no
strangers, but you also run
into a lot of strange
coincidences as well.
You may recall in an
earlier edition of the weekly
paper two total strangers,
that is, to each other,
converged on each other on
the number one tee. That was
the day a local member
asked the golfer approaching
the tee if he could join him.
As they introduced them
selves it was Harry Reeves of
Jackson and Jiggs Reeves of
lis.
Mr. and Mrs. Carson
Singley of Mesa, Arizona are
visiting a number of relatives
here and attended the
Singley reunion Sunday at
Indian Springs.
Rev. and Mrs. Larry Dent,
pastor of Longwood Baptist
Church in St. Louis, Mo., and
Mr. Bob Thurmon, minister
of music, Mrs. Thurmon and
three children, and a group of
members of the church,
totaling 38 in number, were
guests for several days last
week of Macedonia Church.
On Wednesday evening the
monthly fellowship supper
was held in the fellowship
hall. After the meal a
musical program was pre
sented by the visiting group
and Don Thurmon, who is
minister of music at Mace
donia. A large congregation
assembled for the musicale
which was an entertaining
and enjoyable event. The
group, who came on their
own bus, left for Missouri on
Friday morning.

Forest Park. This past week
the same incident occurred
only this time it was two
golfers named Davis, both
members who had never
actually met. It was Mack
Davis of Jackson and Warren
Davis of Locust Grove.
Speaking of Locust Grove,
we’d like to inform Syd that
you don’t get an eagle using
two different balls. That
information comes from
Syd's playing partner.
As long as unusual situa
tions occur at Deer Trail Golf
Club, we’ll continue to send
them in to the weekly paper.
If you’re familiar with the
golf course you’ll understand
that it would almost be
impossible to drive the green
on number nine.
Oh, there are some of the
long ball hitters like Joe
Brown Jr., Tommy Glide
well, Larry Biles, Bill
Nelson, Johnny Morris, and
maybe a few others that
shoot it out of the hole, but it
heads toward the swimming
pool, etc. It took the little
fellow with the mighty
know-how to send the little
pellet flying off the tee at
number nine around the trees
and on to the green. It was
Gay McMichael. We waited
over ten years to see that and
it may be that much longer
before the feat is accom
plished again.
Not Enough
Horace Greeley was once
approached for a donation to
help save millions of his
fellowmen from going to
hell. “I’ll not give a cent,”
Greeley said. “Not half
enough of them go there

Goose Quills
When quill pens were in
vogue from the 6th to 19th
centuries, goose quills were
used for ordinary writing
although swan’s feathers
were preferred. The sharp
ened feather of a crow was
prized for tracing the finest
line.
Weekly
Devotional
Dr. Charles A. Risher
Stark United
Methodist Church
In Psalm 146:5 we find
these words: “Happy is he
that hath the God of Jacob for
his help.” Some would
consider it rather strange
that the Lord should say, “I
am the G0d...0f Jacob”; but
He does a number of times in
the Old Testament. What
might we learn from this
otherwise obvious reference?
Originally Jacob was a
crafty, grasping, unscrupu
lous man. We sometimes
make allowances for one who
falls, due to some quick
impulse or because he
happens to be weak and
unwatchful. In fact, we may
even have pity and compas
sion for him. But there is
another kind of man,
scheming and unworthy, for
whom we hold only con
tempt. How amazing then
that God, the One of absolute
holiness, should thus identify
himself as “the God of
Jacob”! It can only be true
because of grace.
When God takes His place
beside a scheming man like
Jacob and says, “I am his
God,” He is not condoning
that deceiver’s sin, but He
wants to do something in him
and for him. Christ said, “I
came not to call the
righteous, but sinners to
repentance.” When Jacob
was crippled by the Lord and
brought to a place of
weakness, he learned to trust
fully and was named “Isra-
