Babe Ruth
League Ends
1977 Season
The Van Deventer Babe
Ruth League has completed
its season and post season
play with the league partici
pating in the state 14 and 15
year old Babe Ruth Tourna
ment in Columbus and the
state 13 year old tournament
in Newnan.
The league, composed of
three teams from Jackson
and three from Barnesville,
was led this year by the
Jackson Exchange Club
team, managed by Freddie
Dodson and coached by
James Biles and Gerald
Kersey.
The VFW team was
managed by Doug Brooks
and coached by Richard
Brooks, and the Butts County
Lions Club team was under
the management of Victor
James and the coaching of
James Ethridge.
The league’s officers are
Wayne Cook, president; Edd
Taylor, vice president; Mack
Davis, secretary; Kenny
Smith, head umpire; Mrs.
James Biles and Mary Ruth
Kersey, score keepers.
Wilma Bridges is the
Ladies Auxiliary president
and the league treasurer is
Mrs. Donald Bristol, both of
whom the teams and officers
would like to thank for “their
hard work in the concession
stand.”
In addition, the teams
expressed appreciation to
Bob Long Chevrolet, Dr.
William Mitchell, Giant Mart
and Red and White of
Jackson for their contribu
tion to the tournament
teams.
The league also expressed
appreciation to the sponsors
—the Jackson Exchange
Club, VFW Post 5374 and the
Butts County Lions Club—
who have sponsored the Babe
Ruth teams in Jackson for
many years, and to the
Jackson-Butts County Re
creation Department for
“maintaining the fields in
such an excellent way this
year and for assisting in
signing up the boys and
helping to get the uniforms
returned."
State Rangers
Crack Down On
Fish Baskets
Two arrests of persons
fishing illegal baskets in the
Ocmulgee River have been
made by Conservation Ran
gers Gerald Kersey, John
Pettis and Roy Morris, all of
the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources.
A month of surveillance by
the Law Enforcement offic
ers was climaxed when the
two local persons were
caught in the act of pulling
the illegal fish baskets into
the boat and putting the fish
in a tub.
The fish baskets and fish
were confiscated by the
Rangers. The illegally
caught fish, which filled a
large washtub, were released
back into the Ocmulgee
River by the Rangers.
The illegal baskets were
used in the Ocmulgee River
between the Georgia 16
Highway Bridge area and the
Thomas Ferry area. The
arrests were made in the
Giles Ferry Area.
Further dragging of the
river in that area by the
Conservation Rangers pro
duced 9 illegal baskets which
were confiscated and the fish
released into the river.
Charges against the two
persons arrested are fishing
with illegal baskets and
fishing with baskets in a
flowing stream. Kersey ex
plained that “the baskets
being used were illegal
because they had splits in
them instead of a trap door,
and it is illegal to fish with
any king of a basket in a
flowing stream.”
The case is pending trial.
