SOCIETY and CUIUS N.W. DISTRICT WORKSHOP, GA DAR, SUCCESSFUL On Wednesday, August 3rd, the Northwest District Workshop of Georgia DAR was held at Squires Inn in Atlanta. This most interest ing and informative meeting was well attended by representatives of the 23 chapters of the district. William Mclntosh Chapter was represented by Miss Ruth Phinazee, Registrar; Mrs. Lee Roy O’Neal, recording secretary; Mrs. Thomas Echols, Chaplain; Mrs. Noah Powell, auditor; Mrs. James Payne, mem ber; Miss Lois Colwell, scrapbook chairman; Mrs. William Hindley, corre sponding secretary; Mrs. J. B. Harper, Librarian; and Mrs. Robert C. Edwards, Regent. A full report of the meeting will be given at the Chapter meeting at the clubhouse on September 21st. This will be an important meeting when the business for the coming year will be discussed and dues will be paid. All members are urged to be present. The meeting will be held at Second Baptist Church and all members are urged to be present. SINGING SATURDAY AT COUNTY LINE CHURCH The County Line Baptist Church at Jenkinsburg will sponsor a singing Saturday night, August 13th, featuring The Beacon Singers of Rex. The program will begin at 8:00 with the public invited. Candler Webb were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Roddy and family of Lan caster, Pa., Mrs. Merle Saunders of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Ethel McCraney of Leeds, Ala., and Mrs. Mary Sue Farmer of Birmingham, Ala. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Watkins attended funeral services for Miss Mary Richards Colvin at Spring Hill in Atlanta on Tuesday morning. Mr. Watkins was one of the pallbearers. STATE PATROL MAKES ACCIDENT REPORT Sergeant W. I. Blount, of the Griffin State Patrol Post, announced today that his post has investigated ll traffic accidents and made 202 arrests in Butts County during the month of July. During the same period, Sgt. Blount said four persons were injured in traffic accidents where property damage of $29,000 was incurred. July also saw 234 pending traffic cases disposed of in the Butts County Probate Court, with fines and forfeiture amounting to $lO, 209.00 being paid to the Court, Sgt. Blount added. Of the 234 cases handled in the Butts Probate Court, 14 entered guilty pleas, 215 made bond forfeitures, one was dismissed and four entered nolo contendere pleas, according to Sgt. Blount. Mrs. Rosa York, Daughter Salem Opens Camp Meeting August 12th Historic Salem Camp Meeting will hold its 149th annual Week of Worship, August 12-19, at Salem Camp Ground on Salem Rd., off 1-20 East, between Covington and Conyers, Ga. Eminent ministers who will bring messages during the week are: Dr. Garnett M. Wilder, Atlanta-Decatur-Ox ford District Superintendent, Saturday 8:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. services; Rev. Paul L. Harwell, Jr., St. Mark U. Methodist Church, Augusta, and Dr. Jerry Vines, Dauphin Way Baptist Church, Mobile, Ala., who will alternate in the 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. services throughout the week. Dr. John Tate, Roanoke, Ala., will lead the singing, and Mrs. Sam Ramsey, Coving ton, will serve as pianist. Daily Bible Classes for all ages are important features of the program, as are “Wide World of Salem Sports”, conducted by Youth Director George Lutz, University U. Methodist Church, Gaines ville, Fla., and special music by over 1000 choir members of various area Churches. Among new features of this year’s program is “Youth Day”, August 13, beginning at 3:45 p.m., in which all youth of the area are invited to participate. Having long since become inter-denominational, Salem Camp Meeting draws wor shippers of all faiths from distant states, as well as from Georgia and adjoining states. Organized in 1828, many 7th generation de scendants still worship in the 1200 capacity, century-plus old tabernacle, built with hand-hewn timber and earth en floor covered with wood shavings. It is recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey of the U. S. Dept, of Interior, for its archives in the Library of Congress. History lovers will also enjoy seeing “Kitty’s Cottage” on the Grounds, home of the little black girl, over whom Methodism was divided almost a century, and many sites listed on the National Register of Historic Sites for Preservation, in nearby Covington, and Oxford, which has been declared a “National Shrine of Method ism”. A modern, rustic hotel on the Camp Ground makes lodging and meals available for those not “tenting” in their own cottages. Godfather Part 11 JACKSON DRIVE-IN Show starts at dusk Final Rites Truman Hard) Held Tuesday Funeral services for Mr. William Truman Hardy, 89, of Jackson, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at three o’clock from the chapel of Sherrell Funeral Home. Mr. Hardy died late Sunday night at Sylvan Grove Hospital where he had been a patient for one day. Rev. Maxie Threatt officiated at the services with interment in Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery. Sherrell Funeral Home was in charge. Son of the late Mr. Charlie Hardy and the late Mrs. Mary Irene Moore Hardy of Butts County, he was born March 24, 1888. He was a retired farmer, a former coroner of Butts County, and a member of the Stark United Methodist Church. Mr. Hardy is survived by one brother, Tab Hardy of Jackson; two sisters, Miss Elsie Hardy of Jackson and Mrs. Charlie Dupree of Atlanta; a large number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jimmy Hardy, Arthur Hardy, C. W. England, Bob Lassiter, Bill Dupree, C. M. Smith. Although rhubarb is eaten as a fruit (often with straw berries), it is actually a vegetable. Tucker Rites Were Held Monday Funeral services for Mr. Rufus Elward “Eddie” Tucker, 31, of Route 5, Dobbins Mill Road, were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 from McDonald Chapel in Griffin. The Rev. Ridey Finley officiated and burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. Tucker lost his life Saturday in the Flint River on Highway 16 near Griffin. He was engaged in the pulpwood business and had spent most of his adult life in Griffin. Survivors include his pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus M. Tucker, of Griffin; six sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Hall, of Jackson, Mrs. Gaynell Man ley, of Senoia, Mrs. Linda Upchurch, Mrs. Dianna Wallace, Mrs. Betty Jo Farr and Miss Mary Gladys Tucker, all of Griffin; brother, Billy Tucker, of Griffin.
