Insect Bites Can Be Dangerous
Or Even Fatal to Some People
So today you decide to go
on a picnic. Or you make up
your mind to mow the lawn
and trim the hedges. Or
perhaps you’d rather relax
and just enjoy the out-of
doors.
It all sounds good. How
ever, you might have some
uninvited company—the bee.
You probably think the bee
is only a nuisance that can do
no more than sting you if you
get in its way. Right? Wrong.
The bee can kill you.
And the same applies to
wasps, yellow jackets, hor
nets and ants. These insects
are members of the Hymen
optera order and are respon
sible for severe allergic
reactions in some people.
According to Dr. Morris E.
Brackett of the Georgia
Department of Human Re
sources (DHR), eight in one
thousand persons are aller
gic to insect stings. And four
of that eight are highly
sensitive. These persons
experience a reaction that
can result in death in minutes
if not promptly treated.
Reactions to stings can be
mild, moderate, severe or
fatal.
A person who is highly
allergic to insect stings may
have previous warning in the
form of a mild reaction such
as swelling, hives, itching, or
anxiety. These symptoms
are sometimes an indication
of a more serious reaction
that can occur the next time
the person is stung.
According to DHR’s Epi
demiology Section, symp
toms of a moderate reaction
include any of the milder
symptoms and two or more
of the following: constriction
of the throat or chest,
abdominal pain, vomiting,
dizziness, wheezing or gen
eralized swelling.
Symptoms of a severe
reaction may include any of
the above and two or more of
the following: labored
breathing, difficulty in swal
lowing, hoarseness, or thick
ened speech, weakness,
confusion and a feeling of
impending disaster.
The most serious of the
reactions can lead to death. A
person with this type of
reaction may have any of the
above symptoms and two or
more of these: lowered blood
pressure, collapse or uncon
sciousness.
About 50 percent of the
persons highly allergic to
insect stings have had no
previous indication that they
are developing a severe
sensitivity. Earl E. Long,
chief of DHR’s laboratory
unit, is one of those persons.
It has been seven years
singe his first reaction. Long
didn’t think he was allergic to
wasp stings.
“It was one Saturday when
I was trimming a hedge. I
must have disturbed a
wasp’s nest, and wasps stung

me on both wrists. Nothing
happened. I didn’t think
much about it,” says Long.
He went to work the
following Monday morning
and by the afternoon his
wrists began to itch and turn
red. “I left work and by the
time I got home I was broken
out in hives on my arms and
stomach,” says Long.
Long had his wife to rush
him to the hospital’s emer
gency room. “By the time I
got there my eyes were
almost swollen shut and my
mouth was puffed up. I also
had trouble breathing and
swallowing,” says Long.
He was given a large dose
of epinephrine and also
cortisone. Within an hour all
symptoms were gone.
. Long recalls that the
experience was “pretty dis
turbing” for him.
Two years later he was
stung again. But this time he
didn’t wait.
“I went straight to the
emergency room and within
a half hour I had broken out
in one big hive,” says Long.
Again he was given epine
phrine and cortisone and the
symptoms disappeared.
“The importance of this
was that two years prior to
this time I had a two-day
delayed reaction to the
sting,” he says. In most
cases reactions occur in a
matter of minutes—not days.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA THURSDAY. AUGUST 11, 1977
DON’T COMPLAIN
Be it fair or be it foul,
Don’t complain.
Ain’t a bit o’ use to howl—
Sun or rain.
Though a cloud be in the sky,
Smile is better than a sigh.
May be better by an’ bye;
Don’t complain.
Some pet scheme gone to
the bad?
Don’t complain.
Better luck next time,
my lad—
Try again.
Don’t cry o’er the milk
thats spilled,
Get another pitcher filled.
Land’s sakes! Ain’t
nobody killed;
Don’t complain.

According to Long, in the
most deadly of reactions,
blood pressure drops, and the
lungs contract and the
victims can’t breathe. With
out quick medical treatment
they will probably suffocate.
According to Dr. Brackett,
emergency insect-sting kits
are available by prescrip
tion. Each kit usually
contains a syringe of epine
phrine, a tourniquet and
complete instructions for
using the kit.
There is also another
avenue of treatment—desen
sitization. The process con
sists of administering to the
patient injections containing
a mixture of several insect
toxins. The first injections

contain a very small trace of
the insect toxins. The amount
of toxins is gradually
increased over a 12-month
period.
After receiving these injec
tions about once every week
for a year, a person has to
continue receiving mainten
ance doses for a long period
of time. -
“The problem is that no
one can guarantee it. A
person has to keep having
injections,” says Long. He
chose not to go through with
the desensitization process,
but he carries prescribed
tablets with him at all times.
If stung the tablets will keep
him alive until he gets to the
hospital.
“It’s been five years since
my second sting,” says Long.
“I haven’t had to use my
Isuprel tablets yet, but I am
thankful that 1 have them if I
do need them.”
