Grand Jury Presentments
(continued from front page)
the building and facilities of
the Butts County Day Care
and Training Center for the
Mentally Retarded. He
stated that they were trying
to assist this group with the
help of Representative Jones
.to obtain necessary funds for
this project from the Small
Business Administration. Af
ter extensive study and
efforts in this area the
commissioner stated this
seems to be the best avenue
to obtain funds for this
project. Chairman Collins
also stated to us that the
financial condition of the
County is now in better
condition than in January
Ist. He further stated that
$623,000 or so dollars of
indebtedness of January 1,
1977 has been reduced to
approximately $250,000. Mr.
Collins also stated of the 24
road department employees
only six are being paid by the
County with County tax
money the balance are being
paid for by CETA.
Mr. Ricky Beauchamp,
Tax Commissioner, came
before the Grand Jury and
presented the taxes past due.
He also stated that he was
going to use all lawful means
to collect any past due taxes.
The Grand Jury commends
the Tax Commissioner for his
efforts and strongly recom
mends that action be
continued until all taxes
lawfully due have been
collected.
The Grand Jury of August
1977 followed up the present
ments and recommendations
of the May 1977 Grand Jury
items pertaining to a
Comprehensive High School
including a Vocational-Phy
sical Education Complex all
on one campus. Mr. Adams,
representing the Board of
Education, and Mr. James,
Supt. of Butts County
Schools, came before the
Grand Jury and gave
information to the progress
being made. They stated that
a committee of some 24
people of Butts County were
appointed and have made
good progress in correlating
information as to needs and
cost. They are ready to ask
for a referendum to deter
mine if the people of Butts
County want to proceed with
the plans.
We, the Grand Jury,
hereby submit the following
names to Judge Whitmire to
serve on the Tax Equaliza
tion Board as well as three
alternates: Tom Taylor,
Mrs. Sandra Butterworth
and B. Haywood Hodges. As
alternates; Lovett Fletcher,
Stanley Maddox and Charlie
Frank Thurman.
We, the Grand Jury, want
to call the public’s attention
that we have a Butts County
Small Claims Court. This
Court has the authority to
handle cases amounting
from $200.00 to $2,500.00. We,
the Grand Jury, highly
recommend that the citizens
of Butts County use the Small
Claims Court. We further
recommend that the Justice
of Peace Court be used to
settle cases of smaller
amounts.
We recommend that these
presentments be published in
the Jackson Progress-Argus
official organ of Butts County
and usual fee be paid for
publication.
This the 16th day of August,
1977.
Respectfully submitted,
