Cosmetologist
Constance McMullen, a
cosmetology student at At
lanta Area Technical School,
won the second-place trophy
in the student styling contest
at the recent Bronner
Brothers Show held at the
Regency in Atlanta. Her
parents are Mr. and Mrs.
John Doyle McMullen of
Indian Springs.
Miss McMullen’s winning
entry was a version of the
popular scoop cut, which is
cut very close in back and is
full in front. Her model was
Melinda Williams, who is
also a cosmetology student at
Atlanta Area Tech.
'This is the first time in
my life I have ever won
anything, and I can’t
describe the thrill,” Miss
McMullen said. “And I have
to thank my instructor, Mrs.
Bertha Howard. She gives
her students many ideas and
then encourages us to put
these ideas to work. But she
did not help with the cut, the
set, or the comb-out that
was my responsibility as the
competing stylist.”
Miss McMullen has been
interested in cosmetology
and hairstyling for several
years. She decided to attend
Atlanta Area Tech after
hearing about the school’s
qualifications and equipment

Miss McMullen commutes
daily by bus to Atlanta, but
feels that the training she is
receiving makes the trip
worthwhile. “My parents
also deserve a lot of credit,”
she added. “They have been
very supportive and are
enthusiastic about what I’m
learning. I share each day’s
happenings at school with
them.” She also has an
opportunity to practice her
skills with neighbors and
friends who want to have
their hair cut and styled.
Miss McMullen will graduate
in September.

Health Tips
HEMORRHOIDS
Hemorrhoids, commonly
known as piles, are one of the
most common health prob
lems encountered today.
Hemorrhoids are enlarged
veins inside or just outside
the rectum, somewhat like
varicose veins in the legs. A
frequent cause is constipa
tion that results in straining,
but there can be other causes
as well. Anything that
interferes with flow of blood
through the rectal veins can
cause hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids themselves
seldom are dangerous to life,
the American Medical Asso
ciation points out. But the

condition that causes them
can sometimes be serious
and should be corrected.
They can cause considerable
pain and discomfort. Hemor
rhoids do not turn into
cancer, but rectal symptoms
that appear to be hemor
rhoids may actually be
caused by cancer.
Many cases can be relieved
by medical treatment. Some
require surgery, but the
operation usually is not a
serious one.
If hemorrhoids are caused
by constipation, they can be
made worse by self-treat
ment, especially if laxatives
are used regularly. Con
tinued bleeding can cause
anemia. If a blood clot forms
in a protruding vein, hemor
rhoids can be extremely
painful. If untreated, they
can break and hemorrhage.
Hemorrhoids are common
among women during preg
nancy. Every expectant
mother should see her doctor
early in pregnancy. Preven
tion of hemorrhoids is one of
the things he will discuss
with her.
Even though you have no
apparent symptoms, your
doctor often will make a
rectal examination each time
you report for a physical
checkup. Only in this way
can beginning cases of
medical problems of the
rectum be discovered early.
Discipline your child often,-
he knows why if you don't.

Learning To
Fly Is Fun
And Easy
No fear of flying? Perhaps
you want to become one of
the more than 650,000
non-commercial pilots in the
United States.
The Federal Aviation Ad

new pamphlet that tells you
how you can go about
learning to fly. You can send

You can get aviation
training in various ways. You
could go out to your local
airport and take lessons from
a FAA certified instructor. If
you do it this way, you’ll have
to make your own arrange
ments to go to ground school,
or you can learn the rules on
your own.
Probably the easiest way
to learn flying is by enrolling
in a flight training school.
There are about 2,500 FAA
approved flight schools that
offer structured training
courses. These courses en
able you to earn your pilot’s
certificate in fewer hours
than at schools that are not
approved by the FAA.
Before you can earn a pilot
certificate, you must get a
student pilot certificate. For
this you have to be at least 16
years old; you must be able
coast, where over 5 inches is
the normal for September.
Temperatures this month
will be a little above normal
in the southeastern counties
and near normal elsew r here.
Daytime highs normally range
from near 90 at the beginning
of the month to the low 80s
near the end.

normally in the upper 50s in
North Georgia and in the low
60s in the southern half of
the state.

have a medical certificate.
You can get a medical
certificate and a student
certificate from any FAA
Authorized Medical Exam
iner or you can obtain forms
from any FAA General
Aviation District Office.
Directories listing the 7,000
medical examiners are avail
able at all FAA offices and at
many airports.
After you get your student
certificate, have your ground
school training underway,
and take your first solo flight,
you can qualify for advanced
in-flight training. Although
you will be able to fly alone,
at this stage you may not
carry passengers, and you
cannot land at certain busy
airports.
Finally you'll be able to
qualify for the private
certificate. You must be 17
years old and have a
minimum of 40 hours flight
