SEPTEMBER 8, 1977 Jackson High Red Devils ’ Against Hogansville I By Frankie Hearn Nineteen Hundred Seven ty-Seven (1977) is here. In fact it came the night of August 26. Never mind, we have had eight months of the double seven prior to. It is here now. Friday night it will be here officially.. .On a place affectionately called “The Hill,” approximately one and a quarter acres of “sho nuff grass,” Tift Bermuda to be exact. It’s soft enough to accept falling bodies, short enough to allow those who are swift of feet to do their cuts and turns, fakes and dives. It’s real pretty green with white lines sparkling under the night lights. “The Hill,” Red Devil Hill, is a combat zone, an arena for combatants, mayhem mas sage parlor for gladiators dressed in patriotic red, white and pale baby blue. They wear numbers on their backs, helmets cover the cranium, pads protect the shoulder to the Butts. For the young gridiron troops who represent Jackson High School in the football wars, 1977 is now HERE. It’s the home opener. “Wait till next year”...is now HERE. For these young football players the real part of the year has arrived. The curtain is going up. The sweat and agony of the long hot August practices are past. The present is show time. For the seniors on this year’s 1977 Jackson Red Devil squad it is the year they will talk about in old grad circles long after most of us are dead and gone. Three yard plunges will then become 30 yard broken field runs; 35 yard punts will increase to 50; gang tackling on the 20 will eventually become an individual game saving goal line stand. Ah the memories... How they will linger. Many a young man long forgets how to diagram sentences, find square roots, or name the political party of ELI HU ROOT, but if he is a football player he always remembers those great grid iron moments during THE “Seasons.” Something else, they remember the price he and his teammates have to pay to carry their school colors and community to success. Funny how the “Thrills of Victory” erase the extra agony of August wind sprints, the formula for paying the price for a game in life while preparing for the game of life. The 76 Red Devils posted a record of five wins, four losses, and one tie. The 77 Devils have already attained a tie this season, a 6-6 knot on 26 August. Nine tough teams lie ahead, between Jackson and an improvement over last year. Friday night it sbe P< yc T 1 '• R, y< Oi R Hi Di ri Tl M te is :C< fi' th ' & re
