August, for the most part,
was just about as hot as the
intense heat during the
month of July. Practically all
the rain we received during
the month came on only two
occasions, that is, for the
most part. We’ll talk about
the rainfall later.
In reference to the heat.
The temperature reached

the highest being on the ninth

You should consult a

for the month was 6.51 that
gave us 31.55 for the year.
For the month of August,
1976 we had 3.40 inches and at
the end of August last year
we had a total of 40.51 inches.
Lloyd Shoals picked up 3.23

them a total of 33.32 for the

Speaking of the rain when
they use the word “scat

whistlin’ Dixie last Saturday
afternoon (Aug. 27th) It was
as scattered and abruptly
stopped as any time I have
seen it.
You take, for instance, at
Dennis Wise’ Service Station.
The rains came from around
the square down to Dennis
Wise’ place, however, it
ended at the center line of
Covington Street and the
Eastern Side of the center
line down to Sank Cawthon’s
was perfectly dry. Then the
rain resumed around Webb’s
and Giant Mart and I do
mean it came down. And
that’s the way they were
“scattered” Saturday after
noon, August 27th, 1977.
Fluoride Facts
Fluoride, though con
troversy continues to sur
round its use, is consid
ered an essential nutrient by
most experts. Taken in ap
propriate amounts, it results
in a significant reduction in
the amount of cavities in
children. Fluoride integrates
into the hard enamel struc
ture of teeth, helping them to
become more resistant to the
food acids which cause
decay.

Trend To Comprehensive High
Schools Grows in Georgia
When Georgia schools open
this month, nearly half of the
state’s high school students
will be attending comprehen
sive high schools. According
to Georgia Department of
Education officials, 120 com
prehensive high schools in
approximately 90 local
school systems will be fully
operational this fall. An
enrollment of 132,000 is
expected in these schools. In
addition, thousands of other
Georgia students will also be
taking vocational courses
offered in many of the state’s
traditional high schools.
New schools, broader voca
tional experiences and more
students are only a part of
the picture, however.
In the past comprehensive
high schools have geared
their training primarily
toward providing students
with basic job entry level
skills so they could get
fulltime jobs upon gradua
tion with some emphasis on
continuing advanced training
at the post secondary level.
Increasing emphasis this
year and in the future will be
placed on providing pre
requisite skills for students
who will go on to post
secondary training.
“A major objective of
recent staff reorganization
within the education depart
ment’s office of adult and
vocational education has
been toward better integra
tion and coordination of
secondary and post secon
dary vocational training
curricula at the local level,”
said Russell S. Clark,
assistant state superinten
dent. “Comprehensive high
schools will continue to
provide students with job
entry skills so they can get
jobs when they terminate
their education. But now,
increasing emphasis will also
be placed on better counsel
ing for post secondary
training and employment
opportunities with the aim of
having students continue
their education.”
Ed Word, the department’s
director of vocational in
struction programs, notes
another trend.
“Over the past couple of
years, there has been a
noticeable increase in stu
dents entering nontraditional
training programs,” Said
Word. “I expect this shift to
accelerate appreciably this
year.”
Specifically, Word expects
more male students to move
into home economic-related
occupations including food
service and clothing and
textiles. Female high school
students are expected to
enter such traditional male

domains as drafting, horti

As in the past the most
popular high school vocation
al programs should continue
to be auto mechanics,
cosmetology, health occupa
tions and construction
trades.
Current plans call for a
total of 250 comprehensive
high schools to be fully
operational by 1985 to serve
students from every school
system in the state. These
schools will offer a combina
tion of vocational and
traditional academic pro
grams. A recent nine-month
study conducted for the
Gecfrgia Advisory Council on
Vocational Education con
cluded that comprehensive
high schools “...provide a
richer, more intensive and
more rewarding education
for students than do strictly
academic high schools.”
Some local systems report
higher student average daily
attendance (ADA) rates for
comprehensive high school
students. Word attributed the
higher attendance rate to
several factors, including
increased student interest.
“Comprehensive high
schools offer a diversity of
learning experiences, not
just vocational courses,”
said Word. “There seems to
be a correlation between
academic and vocational
education. Often a student
who gets into a vocational
program will see more need
for academic courses. In
terest is .stimulated and
grades improve when a
student is able to make
classroom work relevant to
life situations.”
Comprehensive high
schools are financed through
a combination of federal,
state and local monies.
New comprehensive high
schools opening this fall
include Rabun Cos. H. S.

HYPOTHYROIDISM
IN OLDER DOGS
Companionship is one of
the main reasons for choos
ing a dog over another type of
pet. A dog can accompany
you on walks through the
country, or perk up your
spirits on a dull day at home.
A healthy, spirited dog is a
welcome addition to almost
any family.
Sometimes though, a dog
owner will begin to notice a
premature sluggishness in
his pet. It begins to gain
weight; it prefers to stay in a
warm corner rather thair
romping outside.
The owner may attribute
this behavior to the fact that
his dog is “no longer a
puppy.” Or he'll shrug it off
and decide that the dog is just
not part of an “active
breed.” This is an unfortun
ate attitude.
There are various reasons
why a dog becomes sluggish
before old age. Some of them,
such as hypothyroidism, are
health problems and should
be corrected.
Hypothyroidism is a condi
tion that develops when a
small gland in the neck,
called the thyroid, produces
insufficient quantities of a
hormone that has a direct
effect on canine metabolism
and regulates how food is
„used to satisfy nutritional
and energy needs. Too little
thyroid hormone sends few of

the food calories into energy
production and makes the
dog gain weight sometimes
to the point of obesity.
The hypothyroid dog tends
to lose hair, especially on its
back. It can develop sores on
the skin. A dog with a low
hormone level cannot regu
late its internal body temper
ature very well and chills
easily. It will seek additional
warmth, even in the sum
mertime. Breeders may
notice that females do not
come into heat or have
difficulty in becoming preg
nant.
This confusing set of
symptoms prompts some
owners and breeders to
mistakenly try and treat
their pets at home. They may
try vitamins for the poor coat
condition, or a different diet
to control weight gain. Only
when these therapies do not
work, do they seek their
veterinarians’ assistance.
True thyroid deficiency re
sponds only to a hormone
supplement, with the dosage
carefully regulated for the
individual pet. Even if an
alert pet owner correctly
diagnoses a thyroid problem,
the correct dosage is not
easily determined. Too much
hormone is as bad as not
enough. If the dog is
overmedicated, it will deve
lop a fast heartbeat, become
nervous and restless.
In the United States, there
is an area called the “thyroid
belt'' that starts from the

In this area, a special type of
thyroid deficiency called
goiter is often seen.
Goiter is a swelling of the
thyroid gland caused by a
lack of iodine in the diet.
lodine, an essential ingre
dient of thyroid hormones, is
not readily available in the
water or locally grown food
in this area. The thyroid
gland swells in response to
this deficiency. An iodine
supplement, usually in the
form of iodized salt, will
reduce the swelling. The
veterinarian may recom
mend feeding more commer
cial pet food since it contains
higher levels of iodine.
Your veterinarian is the

thyroid problems. I recom

veterinarian if you notice
signs of hypothyroidism so
that the condition can be
treated as quickly and
effectively as possible.
