Yesterday’s matinee artulehCo was the big¬

as the lower floora, any where to get a

A Country Dance.
\ gentune, old.fR.'inoned country
dance at the resid.nce of Mr. Nowell, 4
J miles above town, on the river road,
last Wednesday night attracted several
of the Fort's young people. A party of
young ladies consisting of Misses Willie
Evans, Eddie Dean Lewis, Lizzie Bran¬
non, and Gusaie Tnrnipseed under the
ebaperouage of Mrs. Brannon and Mrs.
Turnipeeed, with fc’am Starke and Ben
Tuniipseed to handle the reins, left town
about G:30, and not far behind them were
Messrs. Tom Wliatiey and Bob McAlister
Mr. G. M. Dudley and an Advkrtiskk
reporter led tho way and arrived in
time to take in the whole of the pro¬
ceedings.
The fiddles .were tuned and the “jerk*
ors” impatiently waiting for the signal
to stait up by the time the crowd lmd
assembled. The majority of the partici¬
pants favored tho square dance, but a
few of the young ladies decided that their
fuu would bo incomplete without a few
round dances, nml they plead, with the
fiddlers for music, to waits by, but ft wits
i n vain for though the fiddlers succumb
c .| to the ontrcaaies, tho instruments,
were regular country fiddles, tuned for
hannles8>d hcaltllJ fiqillire da:iCrg> aU(1
could not be induced to emit music suit¬
able to other dances. The young ladies
however, werejuot to eeprived of their
pleasure, so th'oy made a cbm bided at¬
tack on Mr. Charles Holmes, demanding
music. He procured a mouth harp, the
fashionable instrument for dance music,
played for them us much as they wanted
There was some complaint that mule
partners were scarce and the music unin¬
telligible, but such trifling matters as
that were not to be noticed, and they
floated around the room, much to their
own enjoyment And to the envy of the
boys, who Cbnld not whirl with them.
14 *the call for “partners for a quadrille”
roused up the crowd and the fiddles
struck up, partners saluted, and the real
ftm of the night commenced. As soon
as one set was finishrd fresh partners
were on the floor, tho music lmrtfiy stop
lied at oil. At kbout 11 o’clock tiifc
town erotrd, with the exception of Tom
Whatley and Bob McAllister, enme back
to town. A new set was formed and tho
dftueing grew faster, The most conspic¬
uous among tlie dancers from the firs act
to the very last, were Whatley and Mc¬
Allister. The number of new steps and
‘shines” they from cut, elicited admiration
and applause the lookers on. The
verdict of the judges was that Bob car¬
ried liis tall ami handsome form very
gracesully through every movement, but
ho was no match for the shorter lmt no
less handsome Tom, who “got there with
both foot at the same time.” The party
broke up about twelve and the guests
after expressing tlicir hearty appreciation
of the successful efforts made to please
hem, and hoping to inert again soon on
just well such another ooc-asion, bade fare¬
to host and hostess and left for their
respective homes.
