The School Text Book Bill.
The Georgia teachers propose to offer
a strong resistance to the passage of the
bill now pending before the Legislature
providing for uniformity of text books
used in the cofnulon schools. The teach¬
ers in their fectmt convention at Athens
put themselves on record as being oni
phntieally opposed to the bill. In the
Georgia Teacher, a periodical printed in
Atlanta, they set forth what they regard
as the strong points agniuat the bill.
One of the objections are that it rostriets
the commission appointed for the pur
lame bf the' selection of books to those
published by southern authors. This
objection is without foundation. The
bill provides that “it shall be the duty of
said commission first to give preference
to Georgia authors uml second to authors
of soutlien i states, w herever in the judge¬
ment of said commission such books are
equal in accuracy, truth and merit. In
easu other than Georgia or Southern
liooks shall be selected by said commis¬
sion, such books so selected shall be en¬
tirely free from sectionalism. ” There
can possibly be no objection to this pro¬
vision. We ba v e a right to fax’or south¬
ern authors, and *.vo should do it, the
merits of their work's being equal.
Aiiotlifcr objection which the teachers
make to the bill is that it provides that
the text books so selected for use shall
not be subject oftener than once in live
years to revision or alteration. This,
they claim, might compel teachers to use
I>ooks for five years which are objection¬
able to thorn. Suppose that we admit a
lew cuAcb of this kind fuuy occur, is it a
sufficient afguiffent to convince the Leg¬
islature that this bill should not become
a luxv ? Does not every school boy know
that lie has often gone to the school¬
room xxith a full complement of standard
iiooks, and been informed by the new
1 teacher that they not by such
were ou
! i hors as he preferred, and that lie must
buy ones. These new*ones aro either
purchased by the pupil from his teacher
or from some book store w ith which the
teacher lias n contract for supplying
them. If such is not the case at present
I xve arc not too old to romember tlie timo

the high eat' regard for tho teachers of
Georgia. They are among our best peo¬
ple, ami do a great deal toward mould¬
ing public sentiment, because they in a
jpvat degree shape the ideas and convic¬
tions of the boys who make our leading
men. Yet. public sclrwl teachers are
employed by the State, and when its
lawful authorities make regulations ‘for
ho government of our common schools,
they si o ild either yield gracefully or go
hack to teaching privato schools where
they can do as they please.
Tlie bill to xvhich teachers aresostren
uously opposed 1ms already passed the
•Senate and lius been read a second- time
in tlie House. Jto Sivuporters are the
^rieuda of the common schools, aud they
believe tho bill is iu tho interest of the
people. It will certainly save them
money, as text books cau not then bo
changed at tho beginning of every scho¬
lastic year if the teachers see fit to do
They xviU, however, bo wlsoted by a
competent commission, and parents will
know xvhiit books it is necessary to buy
for their children and hoxv much they
will cost.
These remarks are submitted with due
respect for the o inious of the teachers.

Nearly all of the brunches of th$ Far¬

the chief purposes of the Alliance, ac¬
