As a citizen, he was keenly alive to all

welfare. lie aspired to no office—it
could not Lave been thrust upon him—
ho sought no leadership among the peo¬
ple—yet his broad common sense, his
varied experience, his remarkablo fund
of information, joined to his personal
magnetism, gave him great influence in
local politics. Ho had a progressive,
broad-gauge public spirit, and a cool,
clear judgment, which made his eoun
s «-4s valuable on all public questions,
We regarded him as a man of tho finest
native braiu that we have ever known.
As a friend, wo can not fittingly speak
of him. It needs a gifted—a more gift¬
ed pen than ours, to show tho nobility
of his character. It is not the few,

froc.” Ilis clear, earnest counsel, his
deep sympathy and open generosity have
cleared tho pathway, lifted the burdens
and cheered tho distressed in many
houst’hnldB. In all the relationships of
life ho was one of nature’s Noblemen.

The death of Mr. E. A. West cast a
gloom over our entire community. The
rad event took place at his late residence
on the Bluffton road, Thursday night
last. He had been confined to bis bed
for several weeks with typhoid fever,
and while his death was not unexpected,
it was none the less painfully felt by
those nearest and dearest to him.
