Crtpl. Oxford has received an ac¬
count of an impoi taut correspondence
between Liverpool and New Orleans
cotton exchanges, showing that the
jute u u is practically whipped. An
extract giving the substance will be
found behnv.
In July the New Orleans exchange
appointed n committee to reply to a
communication from the Liverpool
Hot ton Association in reference to
the use of cotton bagging. The con¬
cluding paragraph oftho Liverpool
communication reads as follows .'
"Whilo asking for this informa¬
tion, with a view of legislation,
should it unfortunately become neces¬
sary to do wo, the hoard respectfully
urges upon your exchange to do nil
in your power to encourage a return
to the use of jute hugging, nml sooh
xiato the necessity of meeting the
- difficulties which the adoption of the
new bagging would raise.”
After meeting the objections of the
Liverpool couimuncation, the presi
dent of the New Orleans exchange
says tho- numerous and powerful
planter’s ' organizations in our cotton
Mates, the x rarmoi’s Allianeo and
others, have declared their intention
to use cotton bagging, and they will
use it. They expect their cotton
covered hales to be sold as advanta¬
geously ns theirs jute covered bales.
This is not impractical, or an un¬
reasonable expectation. They have
eight or nine pounds lens bagging
than the jute covered bales, and also
hj pounds of cotton bagging that is
susceptildo of conversion into some
other cotton goods.
It seems inevitable that these val
