A Maligned Itird.
Ofton in the evening, nn hour nr
wo nl'ler sunset, the outdoor nat¬
uralist may hear from the shade of
h thick hemlock, or from a grove
in some ravine, a prolonged quar¬
tering nolo. Though tinged with
melancholy, it in soft and mn cal
and la, indeed, as Lowell says, one
of the sweetest sounds in nature.
And yet this is the characteristic
note of the bird which has gained >
or reasons unknown to me, the,
unpleasant nnmc of “screech owl.”
This pretty little owl, porhnps
1 'to prettiest of tho family, is but
slightly larger than a robin, but
looks much larger on account of
fluffy feathers and large head. It
1 found in teinpcrato North Amer¬
#
ica, and is quite common in mostef
tl»e ca-tcrn states. Generally it
lives in tho woods, but it is found
also of frequenting barns, old or*
chard*, and groves near the water*
It is very couiagcous, and can
kill other b ids us largo ns itself;
but usually it preys on mico and
gmsshoppcM'S. Its mousing abili¬
ties are so great that it has been
aptly named “llui feathered cal” ;
and its great yellow eyes, eur-like
lulls and night-prowling habits all
unite to make tho naino suitable.
Tho soft call already dcsciilcl
■ s really tho love note of this owl.
it is its song j ist as much as ti o
prolonged chanting* of any of our
common birds arc their songs; and
it will be hoard oftenest in tho ear
ly spring, although it is not unus¬
ual for this owl to sing nearly tho
w liolo around-
Uore, then, wo havo in this little
owl an exnmplo of pravery, indus¬
try, and cheerfulness; and those
qualities are shown by tho very
bird of all others that is least cred¬
ited vviill them; for, if names and
reputations are to count for any¬
thing, surely tho very last bird to
which to which wo would look lor
an exnmplo of courage and mcri*
incut would bo an owl, and above
nil, a scroech-owl.—From “The
Screech-Owl, ’ by Krnost K. Thomp¬
son, in St. Nicholas for March.
