The Eight Hour Movement,
The lending topic in labor circle*
is the eight h«*nr movement which
the Federation of Labor proposes
inaugurate May 1 next. President
Romper*, of the federation, was inter¬
viewed in ttgard to the movement
the other day, and ho *aid that the
proMpect* of it* being a *nrce»* were
very eneonraging. He said that he
wis «laily in receipi of letters from
well known business men and politi¬
cians favoring ti. that the working¬
men were enthtlsiastie about it, am
that there wovhl probably be le*s op¬
position to It than was exacted.
The public mind, he said, had been
educated up to the ract that the pro¬
posed reduction of the hours oflabor
did not mean the derangement or in¬
jury of business, but the prosperity
of the employing desses, followed by
the improvement of the wage-earners
who would become better thenkers,
better citizens and better men.
There will not be a general de¬
mand throughout the country May 1
for eight hours as a working day’
hut the federation will select n cer
tain-trade sn a certain locality t<
make the first demand, and all of the
•■vfir.ciiCCT.nrt fairer of the federation
which includes more than 600,00'
members, and which is
strong, will he concent-ated upon
that trade and locality. Other trades
in oteer localities will not be discour¬
aged if th «y wish to make the de¬
mand at the same time, however.
At a meeting held Feb. 7, it was de¬
cided to call for Abe latest informa
ti'*n,Si« order to determine whicl
trade should he selected to begin tin
movement. Eventually the fedora
tionjliopes to secure the eight-hnm
working flay for all of the trades.
This movement will not lie confin
•d to America, hut will take in a
lumber of Kuropeon countries. It
vill be the most gigantic Iain i
movement ever attempted, but it
•xtensive character, while seeniinj
it first glance a poin t in its favoi
nay in reality be an impedimen t
its success. In Europe socialists
loctrins have speach widely ainoii;
lie workingmen, who in a movement
of this kind are likely to cost asicb
ti»e conservatism that will probahl
>e displayed in this country, and t.
esort to radical measures, and i.
that event the antagonism of employ
>rs would be stronger than it wool
oa otherwise, and the suffering an
v! deuce attmdant upon strike
might have a depressing effect upe
the movement in America.—Sava -
