The most opinionated and intolerant
persons are the religious bigots. An
instance in illustration is noted hv the
Louisville Courier-Journal: “The At-
lanta pastor who rebuked his congre¬

was sure, and that was his religion,
turns out to be noted for his attacks
upon other creeds. People who are

RUSSIA AND THE UNITED STATES.
The overtures of the Czar for an in-
lernntional agreement,cutting down the
aimamenls of . the hail those
powers to
at present, looking to a possible total
disarmament in the future, has met
with a check in the slowness of Eng-
land to take part in the conference.
1 he United States is going in the op-
positc direction from that proposed by
,Su ** ia 3,1,1 , at a rj P ,,J ■ , ,ate .... " ,lllc -j
'
Russia would lead a movement looking
t0 the final stoppage of war as a means
of settling internatioual difficulties,
United sou, „ milking nrmngc
raeQ j 8 lo cm broil themselves in foreign
difficulties, and arc preparing to large-
ly increase the navy and quadruple the
army. Of all peoples we ought to lead
m the establishment of peace and in
the ridding the world of the fearful bur¬
dens of war establishments. Europe
has become enamored of the prosperity
and wonderful strength of the U. 8.
and looks to her small army and navy
with their correspondingly small
army and navy, budgets as the explan¬
ation. They wish to rid themselves
of the intolerable burdens under which
the people groan, and, and by which
they lose their liberty and their prop¬
erty, and are made socialists and an¬
archists. We on the other hand are
getting tired of our uneventful and
prosperous career and arc becoming ep-
amored of the old world policy of large
armaments and territorial possessions,
with their attendant excitement and
glory, forgetting that under the tinsel
there is the unbearable weight of tax¬
es which grinds the peasant population
down to a hopeless and joyless servi¬
tude.
Russia is right, whether the young
Czar is sincere or not. If the world is
seeking happiness and peace, it must
be found for the people in disarma¬
ment and reduction of taxes. One
third of the revenues goes Iv pay the
interest on the money lost in her wars.
It is worse with Spain, for she has been
unable to meet the iiUercst on her war
debts and lias gone into a permanent
of bankruptcy. Italy is sinkfng deep¬
er and deeper into debt along with
France, in the effort to sustain an un¬
naturally large army and navy. The
United States have until recently been
paying off their debt, and their burdens
should grow lighter and lighter, but for
the new fad of imperialism which
promises immeuse increase of the na¬
tional debt and a permanent increase
the annual appropriation for war pur¬
poses. Wo have a sufficient burden
in o ir extravagant pension list. It is
to he hoped that our statesmen will
not yield to (he imbecile demands made
upon them and that, resisting the
thoughtless and shortlifed sentiment
in favor of expansion they will refuse
to acquire territory which will involve
a continual outlay on our part. Porto
Rico and Hawaii arc small affairs and
will not involve much expeuse, but m
Cuba and the Philippines there is dan¬
ger.—Southern Presbyterian.
