Is the Cup Iu llunu/ r?
There Is hardly any use of dlsguLlng
the fact that the international yacht¬
ing trophy Ik in greater danger of being
captured by English yachtsmen than it
has ever been before In the fifty years
since It was victoriously brought hither
by the gallant yacht America. That Is
the opinion of many yachting experts.
There Is a feeling In some quarters,
not wholly un-American or unpatriotic,
that under nil the circumstances the
transfer of the trophy to British keep¬
ing for a year or two would not be an
i pedal calamity. Whether with rea¬
son or otherwise, the sentiment more
or h wi idy prevails that th ■ New
York Yacht club, which holds* the
America’s cup by deed of gift, has not
noted In nu altogether sportsmanlike

h'g“ 1 custodian of the trophy had an
unquestioned right to dictate terms
under which the International races
should , ,,, be sailed, It Is telt that n some
what broader and more liberal spirit
i-hould have characterized Its attitude
toward caudiduteH for the houor of
furnishing a cup defender.
Ho fur as the American public Is con¬
cerned, it lias no special Interest In tbo
New York Yacht club or any individual
yachtsmen or syndicate of yachtsmen.
It Is, however, vitally Interested In
this aud other International contests of
fckill and prowess In sport. And It
Wants to see such contests, so far as
our end of them Is concerned, made
broadly and representatively American.
If a contest purports to be Internation¬
al, the American people want to be rep¬
resented by the best possible product
of American skill and prowess and
have the preparatory tests open to all
candidates. Whether this has been dono
In the preliminaries of the coming race
Is open to doubt In various quarters, it
is therefore not unnatural that the feel¬
ing should exist that the hiss of the cup
would not he balled with universal sor¬
row at tills time or universally recog¬
nized as a serious setback to American
yachting, particularly as the old Co¬
lumbia, which has been selected to de¬
fend tho cup by virtue of her clearly
proved superiority over the new Consti¬
tution, will be commanded by :i Scotch
sklpiKT and manned by a Scandinavian
crew.
There Is likewise a very generally
prevailing sentiment that if we are to
temporarily lose the America’s cup we
would prefer above all others who have
come after It that Sir Thomas Lipton
should be its custodian until such time
as we are ready to send ov’t r a repre¬
sentative American boat to bring It
back.
The council of the American Bar as¬
sociation, which Is In a real sense tho
court of last resort for the members of
the legal profession In the United
States, has recommended the adoption
of an amendment to its constitution ml
mlttlng women lawyers to member
ship. If this amendment Is adopted,
as it Is believed will Iv the case, the
feminine members of the bar will
dream of still greater triumphs. As
women are admitted to the practice of
law. there Is no reason why they should

association, why may they not be elm
son to important places on the judicial
bench? In time the suggestion may be
made, and not without reason, that
women Judges be chosen for service in
the Juvenile courts, before which the
wrongs of children come for adjust
mem and in which women arc perhaps
better able to exercise wise and intelii
gent discretion than men.
