The municipal content whioh was
brought to a close last Ttiesduv. was
unite a subborn light, li was :he lirsi
time that Mr. McAllister lias had oppo¬
sition in the nine years that lie has
been mayor, anil each side was indus¬
trious in bringing out a full vote. There
were not more, than ten or twelve
whites who tailed to vole, ami some of
them were away from home.
There is always more or less feeling
aroused in such contests, and it was
feared hy some that there would be
trouble at the polls. Hut we are pleas¬
ed to state that everybody was cool
and sober, and the only lighting done
was in a battle of ballots. In tact
it was a, remarkably quiet and peacahte
election.
A number of the colored voters were
challenged by the opposition to the
old administration and several arrests
made for illegal voting. Hut the sup¬
porters of the ticket for whioh the ne¬
groes challenged had voted, had with
the advice of eminent pi IV-sionid
ability been careful to have e\ory voter
duly qualified, and feeling perfectly
safe and contideiit on this line, readily
made bound for the parties arrested as
fast as warrants were served, We
understand that it is contrary to law to
arrest parties at an election or going to
or from an election, anil somebody
connected with these arrests have ren¬
dered themselves liable to a heavy
line.
There were some leu or fifteen
whites voting foi the new ticket who
were not qualified, but none of them
were challenged.
When the fight was over aud the
ballots counted it was found that Mr.
McAllister had received KM votes while
his opponent had only 74. Mr. J. E.
Peterson, on the old ticket, for couu
wlinun lead tk® t-ic'ket sii^volcs.
Mr. ( W. Morris, candidate for coun¬
cilman on the other side ran ahead of
:.is ticket live votes, Mr. S. J). (,'ole
man’s name was on both tickets.
There have recently been warm
municipal contests in other Georgia
towns and we note that, the papers ot
such towns congratulate the peope on
their prompt buriial of their hatchets
and an evident disposition to let by
gones be by gones and all pull together
for the general welfare of their towns.
We trust our people will see the wisdom
of this course and adopt it.
•This being the lirst time Mayor Mc¬
Allister bad opposition in the nine
rears he has served the town, we con¬
gratulate him upon his splendid vie
