This plant was established for the purpose of giving a course of study to cane syrup manufac turers of the gulf states. These manufacturers had ex petienetd great difficulty in mak ing a set up of uniform color, pre venting it from reverting to sugar and fermenting. The plant was established by Dr. Wiley, chief of the bureau of chemistry, and his experiments proved entirely successful.
