WRY EDUCATE THE CHILDREN.
The Second Article on This Important Sub
ject From Prof. Hendricks.
In my first article on this sub
ject, I found I could not do more
than give a definition of Educa
tion and merely suggest an idea
or two as to who the chi dren
really are. In this article I pro
pose to go at once into the rea
son that answer my question.
It would be manifestly the
height of folly to undertake to
educate beings not susceptible of
development. If human beings
possessed mere instinct alone as
do the lower orders of animals,
our systems of schools might as
well be abandoned. But won
derful faculties capable of al
most infinite development are
our heritage. The design of the
great creator is most manifest
in us. In as much as our ex
istence here is to be one con
tinuous struggle for mastery
over the forces, of nature and
the things about us, according
to God’s great first decree, it
is most fit and proper that this
struggle should begin with
birth and end only in death.
We are not like the birds, beasts
or fishes. Nearly ail of them
are as wise on the first day of
their existence as they shall ever
be. The young bird may n n
away from the nest with the egg
shell on his back. His muscles
respond just as readily then as
they ever do. The young lambs
spend their first days skipping
and frisking on the hill side in
the beautiful sunshine. Like
wise the others of the brute
creation. But not so with man,
absolutely helpless, he must kick
ten thousand kicks before he
develops strength and control

sufficient to st; nd upon his feet,
after or u r less falls, numerous
bumps and thumps, he passe.-
the control of his locomotior
over to various, secondary nervt
centers that the brain may bi
free to look after more import
ant matters. Now I wish t<
suggest that the development oi
the mental and moral faculties
of man is no more rapid than ir
that of his physical being
Therefore, on account of the fact
that so much time and effort are
required for anything like a
proper development of our be
ings, because we are required bj
the creator to subdue and havt
dominion over all other created
things on our earth, and because
we can not successfully ac
complish in the uncultured state
my of the high purposes mani
fest in our creation, it is our
bounden duty to begin early this
all important work and continue
it unremittingly so long as op
portunity will allow if we are to
fulfil even in a slight degree th<
high destiny of the race, I hav (
given my strongest reason first
Will give some more practica
ones in my next.
Very truly,
J. Walter Hendricks.
It Is Dangerous to [Neglect a cold.
llow often do we heat it re

is on his back with pneumoni.
This is of such common occurence

Heart-rending Conditions!
Douglas on fire and Chicago Sinking.
10000 Years from Today Chicago will be under Water
Twelve months ago, it was heart-rending, to think that a young man,
living in the city of Douglas, who been wounded by Cupid’s cunning darts, was
unable to buy what he wanted, and what he knew would please his lady love,
because it was not here for him. To-day the headlight of fashion is shining in
on our beautiful city through the medium of
* & WILCOX, *
who will take pleasure in selecting for their customers, just such styles as are
most suitable for each individual.
We are not the largest
BUT THE, MOST UP-TO-DATE.
To our friends in the city, and aboad, we extend a cordial invitation to
call on us, and assure them that they will receive every courtesy that can
be shown the public, by the man behind the counter, having spared neith
er time not money in selecting our spring and summer line of ready-to
wear clothing, we feel sure that no store can offer the same quality of
goods for less that we offer
Yours anxious to please
