FOR THE LITTLE ONES.
f Queer South American Plant With a
Long Name.
There is a nkut down in South
Africa, called by the hard name of
“mesembryanthemum,” which so
closely resembles a pebble that it
has been picked up in mistake for
one. The leaves of another variety
of this plant, which are about as
large as ducks’ eggs, resemble a
stone of brownish gray color tinged
with green. Still another species
looks like quartz pebbles.
Fortunately this plant of the big
name has a good many other names,
some of which are so curious you
may enjoy hearing them. There are
about 300 or 400 varieties of the
mesembryanthemum, which, as a
rule, has thick, fleshy leaves and
white, yellow or rose colored flow
ers. The fruit is a caps in e which
when the rain strikes it swells out,
opens up and scatters its seeds. The
flowers, as a rule, only bloom about
noon, so they are sometimes called
the midday flower. Other names
for certain varieties are fig mari
gold, pig’s face, dog chop, cat chop,
Uottentot fig, the hatchet leafed
marigold and the ice plant.
Amusing Contests.
The potato and spoon race is al
ways jolly, every contestant being
required to carry a good sized.pota
to about the room in a teaspoon,
having one arm held behind.
Father more of a novelty is the
orange and pin trial. Large oranges
are placed upon the floor in one cor
ner of the room, and each person
in turn is required to pick up one
of the oranges upon a common pin
and make a complete circuit of the
room with it so poised, using but
one hand.
An egg and fan race will amuse
children of all ages. Prepare a
iufficient number of eggs by “blow
ing” thern, designate a certain strip
of carpet as the race course, starting
all at a certain point, then propel
the eggshells by the breeze from the
fan.
A butterfly and fan race can be
tried if preferred, the butterflies be
ing made of delicately tinted tissue
paper.
Th« Days In Auguft.
Few persons know why August
has thirty-one days. July, which
takes its name from Julius Caesar,
has thirty-one days, and Augustus,
who completed the calendar, declin
ed to submit to the indignity of see
ing his own month branded with
the inferiority of one day less. The
astronomers had accordingly to re
shuffle the lunar cards and after
some perplexity hit upon the expe
dient of shearing twenty-four hours
from February’s glory in order that
August might face the world on a
footing of perfect equality with
July.
Mental Arithmetic.
A boy who can run seven miles an
hour throws a turnip at a team
iter who can only run five miles an
hour. The turnip hits the teamster
in the ear, and he sets out to pursue
the boy. How many years, months,
weeks and days will it take him to
overtake his victim, and what will
be the color of his whiskers when
the event comes off ?
1 A Chair Sleigh.
For the boy who is handy with his
tools a chair sleigh is easy to make.
Take a camp chair, the kind that
has a back to it, and nail it firmly
to any old low coasting sled.
It is fun to make it, and it is fun
to push sister on this sled the next
time you go skating. You will en
joy your sport the more, and sister
will get an outing at the same time.
Funny Ann.
When Ann went to the grocer's
This was her request:
"A Cozen nice fried eggs, please;
I like them that way best."
Her Idea of It.
“Mamma,” said little Florence,
who had accompanied her mother to
church, “I know what the minister
meant when he spoke of our ‘chil
dren’s children.’ ”
“What, dear?” eskrd hr moiher.
“Polls,” answered Pk.vnec.
