LETTER TO J. F. PIERCE,
Hazlehurst, Ga.
Dear Sir: Not one man in ten
knows whether he’s wasting
money or not, when he paints.
It depends on the paint.
With one paint, your job will
take 10 gallons and cost SSO for
paint and labor;
With another 12 and cost S6O;
With another 14 and cost 70;
With another 16 and cost 80;
With another 18 and cost 90;
With another 20 and cost 100;
With another 22 and cost 110.
Here’s an example. Professor
Irvine, of Ihe Academy, Mercers
burg, Pa., painted the floors of
his dormitories every year, one :
year with one paint, next year j
with the paint of the other dealer
there —to divide the business be
tween them—till Devoe came to
town. *
The job took 60 gallons; takes j
60 Devoe. The difference, 30
gallons, $l5O. He didn’t know
he was losing $l5O a year till he
got Devoe.
Another example. When Geo.
W. Brown, Union, S C. painted
B. F. Arthur’s house first time it
took 30 gallons “cheap” paint;
repainted Devoe; 14 gallons.
Yours truly
25 F. W. Devoe & Co
Watt & Holmes Hardware Co.,
sell our paint.
Mobile ought to lead in the au
tomobile business.

The Farmer’s Union is doing
something for the farmers of this
county. Have you heard of a
man who belonged to the Union
say any thing against the new
Agricultural school? Have you
heard a Union man say any thing
against any move toward ad
vancement in this county? Aside
from the good they are gettin
from it in a financial way, and
that is a good deal, they are get
ting higher and broader ideas of
life.
The farmer needs the support
and encouragment of the Com
mercial world. Do they get it?
No. Why? Ignorance of the
commercial world. The commer
cial world thinks that the farmer
is going to keep on as he has
heretofore and that he will never
act intelligently and will never
take a stand for himself. That
is why we say “Ignorance.” The
farmer is sure to surprise the
commeicial world, and the mer
chant and banker and business
man who first gets wise to the
new Southern farmer will thank
his stars for many moons, when
others are brooding over
their regrets.
Education is the prime motive
power of all success, and we have
said before, “there can be no
success unless there is education”
and we say now that the farmer
only need to be educated along
the lines that are necessary for
his success, and we are glad to
note that there is great interest
being manifested over the whole
country by the farmer in practi
cal education. Every farmer
should belong to the Union. No
Union man will ever oppose the
best interest of his county and
will always be found standing by
what will do his'county good.
