Rev. E. P. Mickel, D. D., a Kentucky
friend of former years and pastor of
Mrs. Hubert’s family, spent some
days this week with Rev. T. S. Hu
bert and family.
On Monday afternoon Mrs. Mar
garet Jordan entertained her little
Sunday-school class and others at a
pretty party. Refreshments dear to
the childish heart were served.
Judge Gordon Knox and Editor Otto
Middleton, of Hazlehurst, were prom

Mr. Preston Ward is spending the

Mr. J. M. Dent returned Thursday
night from Athens where he went as
a delegate to the state convention of
the K. Of P.s, which has been in ses
sion there this week. He reports a
most delightful trip hnd session.
Mrs. W. C. de Graffenried, of Nor
folk, Va/, is the guest of her cousin,
Mrs. W. F. Staten, at her home on
Patterson street for a few days. Mrs.
de Graffenried is visiting in Douglas
and motored over in Mrs. Dickerson’s
car with Mrs. J. W. Qumcey and Mrs.

Miss Grace Gaffney will give a pret
ty little play Monday evening, to
which von are cordially invited to at
tend, at 7:45. Those taking part are
the pupils of her music and expression
classes and other little folks from the
primary grade. The play i- entitled,
“When Polly Was Queen of the May,”
and promises to be quite entertaining.

Virginia Appleby Entertains.
On Wednesday afternoon quite a
number of little folks enjoyed the
birthday party given by little Virgin
ia Appleby in honor of her sixth birth
day. Lots of the usual jolly games
were played, and ice cream and cake
served - . (
Sunbeams Program.
On Sunday morning at the Baptist
church, th eSunbeam Band, under the
supervision of Mrs. Julia Foster, gave
a wonderfully bright and entertain
ing program on the occasion of their
mite box opening. Every piece was
well rendered and bespoke the untir
ing efforts of Mrs, Foster.
A part of the program which was
very pretty, was the song, “Jesus
Loves Me,” sung in the Ghinese lan
guage, and the children were notice
ably proud of their display of learn
ing.
With the amount already in hand,
and the amount in the mite boxes, the
children contributed .$12.85 to mis
sions.
Mrs. E. L. Tanner was the pianist
on this occasion.
Miss Mae Williamson Hostess.
Quite a lovely social event was the
shower given on Monday afternoon
by Miss Mae Williamson, the honoree
of this occasion being Miss Noia John
son, one of the season’s brides.
Miss Williamson entertained her
guests on the lawn where they were
engaged with their sewing and fancy
work, until Mary Roberts showered
her with all ths dainty gifts the young
ladies had prepared, as an addition to
her trousseau;
Besides the regular members of the
Qui Vive club and the young lady
teachers, there were present Mrs. S.
M. Roberts, Mrs. W. R. Wilson, Mrs.
J. W. Dale, Mrs. McEachren, Mrs.
Hodges, Mrs. H. B. Johnson, Mrs.
Woodard and Mrs. F. M. Appleby.
Delicious r efreshments were served.
Miss Johnson has many friends in
deed scores of them, who will part
with her with genuine regret, on the
occasion of her wedding in June, to

GRAND OPENS
MONDAY KI&HT
The Grand Theatre will reopen next
Monday night under the management
of Mr. Ben L. Lane, its former man
ager. By some arrangement Mr. Lane
will have charge of the theatre here
and Mr. C. H. Smith, who was an
nounced last week as taking charge
here, will have charge o f the Grand
in Waycross, where Mr. Lane has
been acting as manager for several
weeks. Mr. Smith will have nothing
to do with the theatre hf;re.
Mr. Lane says that he is glad to
make this announcement, as he don’t
want to live anywhere else tha nhere,
and is glad to be aide to announce
that he will assume complete control
here next Monday night, which will
be the first performance since the
theatre has been closed.
They will open Monday night with
a V. L. S. E. picture, followed during
the week with such programs as the
Universal and Fox. Mr. Lane pro
poses to give nothing but the best.
Also remember that a change in the
seating arrangement has been made
recently, and other improvement which
will add to the comfort of the movie
fan.

SUIT CASL FOUND ON HIGHWAY.
Dr. Stonner, of 1243 Wealthy St..
Grand Rapids, Mich., who was pass
ing thru Douglas a few days ago, tak
ing the central route back home from
Miami, found a suit case full of
clothes, on the highway a few miles
out of Douglas, and left same at this
office.
The owner of the suit case and con
tents may have same by calling at
this office and identifying and paying
for this notice.
MR. H. KIRKLAND RE
CEIVES SEVERE INJURIES
Mr. H. Kirkland happened to a very
serious accident at his still at Chat
terton last Monday afternoon, when
he was severely burned on the lower
limbs from his waist down. The ac
cident was caused by the pipes to the
boiler of the still pump which blew
out while Mr. Kirkland happened to
be standing: near, and hot water was
thrown on his lower limbs.
Mr. Kirkland came home at once
and medical attention g;iven the burns
and at this time is doing: very nicely.
He has been confined to his bed only
a few days.
