A STRONG ENDORSEMENT.
We publish below a letter written by Mr. J.
F. Heard, a prominent business man and banker
of ?' .-m to his friends in behalf of Hugh M.
Dorsey, candidate for governor. Mr. Heard is
a pr -irinert member of the Primitive Baptist
church and is a brother of Elder Walter Heard,
who we understand is one of the leading min
ister' >f the Primitive'Baptist denomination.
The letter speaks for itself, and is from a man
of the highest integrity and business ability:
“Macon, Ga., July sth, 1916.
My Dear Sir:—
I hope that you have already made up your
mind to support Hon. Hugh M. Dorsey for Gov
ernor, but if you have not already reached this
decision, I most earnestly and sincerely request
that you give his candidacy due consideration.
When the character and makeup of the man
is considered in connection with what he stands
for, Dorsey is unquestionably, in my judgement,
the r. ;n for Governor.
Georgia needs a man of fixed convictions, a
man of firmness, man of brain, and a man of
courage in the Goverr’a chair, and such a man
is Dorsey, and personallv, I feel that we will
make a great mistake not to elect him.
1 feel that the voters of Georgia should rally
to the support of Dorsey, and thus take ad
vantage of a somewhat rare opportunity to
place a really great man, in the Governor’s of
fice.
Sincerely yours J. F. HEARD.”

Saturday was a great day in Douglas from

THE DOUGLAS ENTERPRISE, DOUGLAS, GEORGIA, AUG., 12 1916.
ATKINSON COUNTY GEORGIA.
Unless the unexpected happens, the bin cre
ating Atkinson county, will likely pass both
House and Senate, and will be ready for the sig
nature of Gov. Harris. Then the.vote on the
constitutional amendment this F all, and the new
county of Atkinson, with Pearson as its county
site, will be the baby county of Georgia. O:
course there are many slips and, as we state,
the unexpected may happen, but the general
impression is that it will now be created by
this legislature.
The people from the lower side of Coffee
from which most of the territory of the uew
county will be taken, have worked faithfully
for the passage of this bill. It probably would
have gone thru long ago, had there not been
somp friction between Willacoochee and Pear
son, as to which of these two towns should be
come the capital of the new county
While the cutting of CofFee will have its ef
fect on business in this county for several
years, maybe in the future, it will prove to be
the best thing that could have happened. It
gives us less territory to handle, less road build
ing and bridges to keep up, but, on the other
hand it deprives us of a valuable lot of taxes,
and worst of all, we lose some of the best cit
izenry of the county.
The people of Douglas have made no direct
fight on the creation of the new county, and
certainly have had nothing to do with the se
lection of the county seat. We regret that
some bad feeling probably exists in some parts
of the new territory, on account of the selec
tion of the county seat, but on the other hand,
should it have been placed at Willacoochee,
there would have existed probably the same
feeling, only in another spot. That matter
had to be settled by the people in the territory
involved.
The Enterprise has had nothing to do or
say as to the selection of a county seat. A year
or so ago, we did agree with the people of the
lower side that they needed a new county, if
any section in Georgia did, and we are not
taking water on the proposition we made then,
hut we believe at this time, if the matter couid
have been defered for a season, until some am
icable adjustment could have been made, some
arbitration, whereby the citizens of Pearson
and Willacoochee could have gotten together
and settled the matter, it would have been in
finitely better for all parties concerned.
We do not propose to offer ourselves as peace
makers. We don’t believe we could accomplish
it i*t this t'me, if we should make an effort.
Nothing but time will heal, and that passes
very swiftly.
The Enterprise desires to congratulate the
citizens of the new territory on their accomp
lishment, and wishes for them and their new
county, nothing but a prosperous and happy
community. Atkincson county is destined to
be one of the banner counties of Georgia. It
has too many good Coffee countians in it to be
otherwise. A county with the territory and
people, who are a part of a great county like
ours, must succeed, and w'e believe that they
will. They have our best wishes, and while we
give up so many good people with great re
luctance, we cannot but admire their energy
and presistency which resulted in the accom
plishment of their greatest desire.
We don’t want these old Coffee countyites
to wean themselves away fi*om us. We don’t
want them to forget their mother county, after
they have reached their majority and settled
up for themselves a home of their own. We
want them to come back to see us. The latch
string will always he on the outside, and the
lamp will be burning until the wee hours of
the morning. Old Coffee is not inhuman.

Judge Lankford seems to he the busiest man

O
Judge Lankfrd made a very fine speech at
the court house last Saturdya. The Judge is
a very fine speaker anyway and being with his
homefolks, right in the midst of his friends,
gave him courage, resulting in one of his best

Jet Bowden made one of his famous political

but let our man here rest in peace. We believe
Jet made a few votes by his address here.

TOBACCO WAREHOUSE
Mullins, S. C.
TOBACCO GROWERS
We wish to announce that our tobacco market opened on
Aug. the Ist. We are glad to say tobacco is selling higher now
than at any time in the history of the Mullins Tobacco Market. We
have the greatest line up of tobacco buyers ever assembled on any
tobacco market in South Carolina.
Our buyers consist of all the big tobacco companies, large
exporters and independent firms of the tobacco trade. The tobacco
people of Mullins have more money invested in tobacco factories,
stemaries, steam plants and prizeries than any two markets in
South Carolina. Thus placing us in position to realize the very
highest market prices for all tobacco shipped to us.
We beg to say that we do the leading tobacco warehouse
business in Mullins which is decidedly the strongest tobacco mar
ket in the state. We make a specialty of handling shipped to
bacco as we handle more than twice as much ahipped tbacco as
any warehouse firm in South Carolina.
We would advise the shipping of your tobacco in cotton
sheets as it shows to better advantage when shipped in sheets. In
our opinion you would do well to sell your tobacco as fast as possi
ble as the entire tobacco trade seems anxious for tobacco at this
time. We promise you our best efforts in securing for you the
highest market price for all tobacco shipped to us,
Very truly,
NEAL & DIXON
