I certify that the above is a true statement of the receipts and dis bursments of the funds of Coffee County for the month of July, 1916. A. W. HADDOCK, Clerk Board County Comrs. OPEN LETTER TO J. R. WALKER - (Contnued from First Page) I will undertake to answer the speech that you delivered last Friday in my presence on issues and issues only. In your lost campaign with Mr. Hen derson, of Irwin county, you were very eager to hurl at Mr. Henderson a chal lenge to meet you in a joint debate, and I cannot understand the attitude that you have assumed in this race by trying to avoid meeting your oppon ents. When I met you at Bristol on our return home Friday evening, I under stood from your words and actions to ward me, that you thought that I was rot sincere in my proposal to meet you before the people, because when you said that you would meet me at j any time and place that I would name,} and 1 accepted this on my part, you ! said that you thought that I was bluff- , ing. In view of th e fact that it is gener- j ally conceded over the district that this ' is a Walker-Bowden race, and that either you or I will represent the peo- j tple of this district, and I firmly be- 1 iieve that I will represent the people ; of this district in congress next sess ion, I submit-you this proposition: You accept my proposition to meet you in the above named counties, and I sug gest the dates of August 29, 30, 31 anu September 1, and if I fail to meet you after you have accepted this challenge (Providential causes only excepted), I promise to retire from this race. Now, I am making this an open letter to you, and I await with pleas ure an immediate reply accepting my proposal. Very respectfully, (Adv.) J. E. T. BOWDEN. Nil HOLLS NEWS Wonder why Mr. Carl Meeks shakes our hand every time we try to slip by his emporium. Whats the idea Carl? We're no politician, so why all this affection? Well, Miss Bessie Meeks done gone and done it. Married Prof. J. B. Sullivan, of Schpestoe, Ga., Sunday afternoon, and left immediately on her ! honeymoon. Good luck. Miss Janie says that everytime she ' sees one of them things of the op- : posite sex displaying their gorgeous j awning-striped hose, she gets a sneak ing notion to tap it gently on the ; head and thus relieve it of its misery, j Major J. A. Davis has got so that ] he doesn’t mind if we call him by his i middle name, as long as we laugh eveyrtime he tells us a joke, and the cotton buyers give him 14 V’cents for , his cotton. Miss Maude Douglas has returned to her home in Jacksonville, Fla., after spending three weeks here with rela tives. If you should happen tp notice Mr. Zene depressed spirits and melancholy expression, then do not wonder at its cause. Imagine how you’d feel if your fair one left you. Macon wants the capitol, and Colo nel Roosevelt wants to he President. Now if some fellow will come along and ask us for our right eye, we’ll go jn arbitration with ourself and adjust •tatters satisfatorily. Mr. Jno. Kirkland is ir. Atlanta on business. Mr. W. B. Barksdale Is back on the job at the Johnson Pharmacy. No girls he’s still singel yet. Mr. Dewitt Anderson has discard ed his sport shirt and now wears a collar and a tie. SHORTY.
