It has been said that the great ness of a tree is measured by the gap that is made in the forest when it falls. Measured by this standard we have lost “a great man and a prince” in the passing of J. M. Ash ley. Banks, railway companies, manu facturing plants, stores wholesale and retail, lodges and social circles miss him and moum e him—their pride and tower of strength. His was a life made visible in deeds. He made it impossible that his name be forgotten by the utterance that he gave himself in achievements that compel wonder and in institutions that survive him. These will keep his memory green and bring others into touch with his genius, year after year, for years to come. There are walls here at Douglas as full of music as old Cremonas. Never have I heard his name associa ted with the faintest, suggestion of fraud or malevolence or anything un becoming a gentleman. His name is honored not only for the vast wealth for which it stands but as well and more for unanswering business integ rity and incorruptible personal recti tude. He rose to the high place which he occupied in the public eye by merit. If written out his life would read like a romance. Discouragements and difficulities which would have daunted others were by him wrought into agencies of success. The young and ambitious have in him a most whole some and stimulating example. He has gone and we shall see him r.o more, and it will be many a year, if ever, before we see another like him in the qualities of mind and char acter and temperament that easily made him our foremost citizen. The death of Mr. Marshall Ashley, of Douglas, may be said to have been caused by grief over his little son, who died two or three days before.
