There was a large crowd attended
the debate Thanksgiving Day. There
was several resitations and everybody
reports a nice time. Will debate again
or, Friday before Xmas, the subject
will be, “Resolve that Mexico should
Ine annexed, to the United States.”

Mrs. Norah Devine’s funeral will be
preached at Mt. Zion the second Sun
day, December 10th. Eeverybody is

TWO PUPILS.
ELIM SCHOOL NEWS.
The Elim school has started for a
six month term.
, Mr. Simon Peterson and Miss Lin
jnie Meeks arc teachers. At the end
jof the first month the enrollment was
70. The school has three pupils in the
eighth grade.
Mr. Simon Peterson and Miss Lin
aie Meeks attended Teachers’ Insti
tute in Douglas Saturday.
The trustees met Friday, December
1, and elected Mr. Wm, Thompson to
suceed Mr. John Lott.
The trustees, teachers and pupils
are anxious to standardize our school.
We already have the sanitary drink
ing system and several other reguir
•nents for this qualificatino.
The trustees and patrons are show
ing a great deal of interest in our
school. They are going to fence the
yard and lay out play grounds.
The boys and girls of the Elim
school met last Friday afternoon and
by the aid of th e teacher, organized a
society, which we named Euphonian
Literary Society. The following of
ficers were elected: Ozah Thmpson,
Pres., James Cole, Vice-Pres., Albert
Roberts, Sec.
The first programe will be given
Friday, December Bth, to which the
patrons ar e invited.
The Elim band is progressing nicely
under the leadership of Mr. Jesse
Meeks.
Its last meeting being held Satur
day afternoon.

Mrs. J. F. Dent was called to the
bed side of her mother, Mrs. Horne,
of Hildreth, Fla., who was seriously
hurt last Friday when a mule ran
away with her.
Lilly Tanner spent Saturday night
with her cousin, Miss Clara Dent.
Mr. J. F. Dent and children were
the guests of his sister, Mrs. B. W.
Tanner, Sunday for dinner.
Miss Annie Bell Cain spent Friday
night, Saturday and Sunday with her
j parents Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Cnin.
Miss Zeda Tanner spent Sunday

The Thanksgiving dinner at the
: school house last Thursday was very
[much enjoyed by those that attended,
! Rev. S. G. Taylor of West Green, made
us a nice little talk that afternoon.

Xmas. Guess all the little folks are
wondering what Santa Claus is going
to bring them.
Messrs. Jeff Lewis and Hery Smith
spent Sunday below Douglas with Mr.
Smith's father.
Mr. H. C. Roberts spent Sunday
night at the home of Mr. John Peter
son, wonder what is so attractive up
that way, Oh. yes Miss White is up
there.
Mr. Arthur Baker looks mighty
pleasing these days, wonder why, Oh.
yes, Christmas is drawing near, hurry
up and let us all know about it.

LIFE OF LATE RIV.
W. J. MADDOX
Rev. W. J. Maddox died May 12th,
1916 at his home in Douglas, another
veteran answered the call and gained
the ranks of the Heroes who have
retired for their rewards by the Great
Commander. Bro. Maddox was 74
years old May 3rd last. Served 4
years in the war between the states
receiving only small scar on one arm.
He was married to Martha D. Hull,
Oct. 10th 1887, was converted in May
18S8, had very little educational ad
vantages. His Christian wife was
largely instrumental in his conver
sion.
Was baptised by Rev. C. C. White,
of Conyers, Ga., and became deacon
of Mt. Zion Church, was ordained to
the Gospel ministry in 1889 (or about
that time). He organized a church
at the exposition mills in Atlanta and
was their pastor until he moved
away and came to South Georgia.
His earthly labors ar e ended and he
has joined the great general assem
bly.
