THE CHRISTMAS SEASON
Christmas is with us once more. Another
twelve months is a matter of history. The
lapse of time seems less each year while we are
sure it remains the same. It seems but a few
wee 1 ■ ago when we made public mention of the
Christmas times, that the event was again here,
while it really has been a year.
And it has been a year filled with history!
Events of the greatest historical importance
have happened, one after another, until it has
made the year 1917 one of the most important
and full of interest of any of the preceding ones.
The progress and important e ents in the
world’s greatest war has made for the present
year one of the big years of history.
The year closes upon us with our hearts
saddened on account of the terrible conflict in
progress across the seas, and in which we are
so vitally interested. But while we are sad, we
have so much to be gi’ateful for and so much
to anticipate. “Make the world safe for demo
cracy,” is our Chief’s slogan, and it most cer
tainly is a great rally song. If ■ his is done as
a result of the present struggle, then our nation
has not fought in vain.
We have always confused Christmas with
Thanksgiving Day. To us it seems like it
should be a time of thanksgiving. The spirit
of the Christmas season always reminds us of
the fact that we have so much to be thankful
for, and an opportunity of giving genuine ex
pression to this feeling. If there is any time
of the year when a hard heart is softened, it is

at this season. If it fails then, the case is a lost
one. There is so much around which never un
folds itself until the Christmas times are here.
The season is like a flower which opens up dur
ing the night, and in the morning exhibits itself
in all its splendor.
Let us not check our impulses which come
with'thb season of the year. Whatever good
they tell us to do, let’s do it, and there is always
plenty of good material to work on. To make
some heart glad, some 30ul happy, is worth a
thousand times the effort, and it can be done so
easily at this season of the year.
Again, this year’s Christmas will be so
much different, in so many homes. So many
homes have been broken up since the last one,
the boys, the husband, and father, being “some
where in France,” far, far aw'ay from us. These
homes are naturally sadder, the season making
the cold fact more painful, but in the end,
should the missing ones return from a victor
ious war, the Christmas seasons to come will be
doubly more enjoyable, because of the return
home of the loved ones, and of the victory w'on.
We Americans have so much to live and
die for. And while our hearts are saddened at
the close of the year, on account of the horrors
of war, we must not give up, but take new cour
age with the opening of the next year and
count the days until we have the greatest vic
tory of all ages, won, and our boys are at home
with us again.

We call attention to the bank statements
on the last page. The deposits are heavier than
at any time in the history of the banks. The
youthful Ambrose bank shows deposits of over
SIOO,OOO, and the local banks come forward
with a half million each. The Willacoochee
banks also make a splendid showing.

Reports from Atlanta say that Billy Sun

German sympathizer accosted Billy in the pul
pit and for a minute or two, a regular bout con
test was on, Billy winning out. Several Doug

We would have, if the price of the message had
been convenient.
