THE OLD CHURCH BELL.
Charlie Tillman likes the old church
bell and —I do too. Mr. Tillman sang
us a good song about the old fashion
ed church bell, which was much enjoy
ed by the old fashioned people who
heard it.
Poe, the crazy poet, made himself
famous by his “Bells” and yet, in that
immortal poem, he did not mention the
church bell. He was not thinking
about churches. In fact, his life was
not exactly the life of a churchman.
He wrote of sleigh bells, wedding
bells, fire bells and tolling bells. In
this poem he says “What a world of
solemn thought their melody com
pells”. The argument for the church
bell is that it compells thought. True,
it sounds the time for the church ser
vices, but it renders a service to those
who never attend church. This is
true especially on Sunday morning.
When the church bell rings, it starts
the folks to thinking and many times
to talking and,, of course, the conver
sation is sure to be about church and
kindred subjects. And in many cases
the matter ends with a decision to go
to church. The fact that church bells
have been used for hundreds of years
is a good reason that they had some
service ,to render in the work of the
church.
The (ban on the church bell is like
tfie ban on many other good things.
The architecture of the church build
ings have been changed, The steeple
that pointed heavenward and the bell
that sounded heavenward have both
been pulled down. A church in a city
is hard to locate, no steeple, and no
bell. The church house and the club
house now) look very much alike. The
elimination of the bell makes it more
so. If you will not let us have the
high steeple, please let us have the
bell, and ring it. W. P.
