Waiving woolens with primitive looms in A fried.
Note the Overseers.
The Union of South Africa is rightly
classed among the great wool pro
ducing countries of the world. Cli
matic conditions there are admirably
adapted to the breeding and raising of
the Merino type of sheep with a
strong, staple wool.
A large part of this country is suit
able only for the raising of sheep,
and the government is making pro
gressive and intelligent efforts to im
prove both the sheep and the manner
of preparing the wool for market
Jackals being a strong menace in
South Africa, long-time government
loans are extended to sheep owners
for the erection of jackal-proof fenc
ing. Government sheep experts are
maintained permanently in allotcd
districts so that their services and
advice may be assured at a nominal
fee.
The mutton sheep of South Africa
is the fat-tailed, black headed Cape—
a non-wooled sheep. As no cross
breeding for mutton lambs is done,
the wools are purely Merino in char
acter.
Progress in this South African in
dustry is particularly noticeable in
the harvesting. Despite the fact that
Kaffir labor can be secured at the
equivalent of $3.50 American, per
month, there is a trend towards "the
modern shearing machine as against
the age-old hand blades, which, even
in America, have not been discarded
by many otherwise entirely progres
sive wool raisers.
A study of this fact, however, read
ily reveals the reason for it. While
there is a first cost for the machine,
the unskilled black adapts himself to
its use much more readily than to
the hand blades, and soon does a re
markably smooth job of shearing with
the machine.
Once adapted to the use of the ma
chine, its economic value is demon-

Deputy Inspector T. W. Overstreet
made the arrest.
Positive identification of the suspect
has not yet been made but officials are
inclined to believe he is one of the De
Autremonts. The prisoner claims to
be named Zintell, with his home in
Yonkers, N. Y., and says that at the
time of the train hold-up and murder
in Oregon, October, 1923, he was serv
ing a term in the penitentiary at West
field, Conn. The local office is com
municating with Conneticut authori
ties for fingerprints and other Bertil
lon measurements to aid identification.

strated In the materially greater num
ber of sheep shorn daily, the better
market value of the wool, the fewer
maimed sheep, and not least im
portant. the additional 5% to 12%
more wool obtained with the machine
over and above the amount of wool
secured with the hand blades. As a
consequence, the machine resolves
itself into a small investment with
certain and big returns.
Steadily, the science of wool-mar
keting in South Africa is fast ap
proaching the scientific efficiency of
the Australian marketing plan, which
is, without doubt, the most practical
and efficient in existence today.
Considering that the four provinces.
Natal, Transvaal, Orange Free State,
and Cape Province, which comprise
the Union of South Africa, have
20,000 square miles less of territory
than Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
Montana and Wyoming combined, it
is surprising to note that they contain
two and one half times as many sheep
as our five states named.
This alone, makes that country a
strong contender for future leader
ship in the wool industry. It is inter
esting to note however, that the great
bulk of foreign progressiveness is duo
to American initiative, American im
plements, and machinery and Ameri
can ingenuity. The South African
wool industry holds true to this in
that American methods and Ameri
can machinery are destined to take a
large and important place in the eco
nomic progress of the far distant
Union of South Africa.

spectors makes a more fascinating
story than any detective story of fic
tion. There are three brothers, Ray
and Roy, twins, and Hugh, four years
younger.
$15,000 Reward Offered.
Folders containing the story of the
crime in which a mail clerk and three
railroad employees were killed and a
mail car dynamited, and offering re
wards aggregating $15,000 for arrest
of three men, have been broadcast
over the country.
In addition to full descriptions of
the three men including photographs
and specimens of handwriting, the
prescription for lenses of tbeir eye
glasses and a detailed account of all
dental work are given. There is a
complete description of their watches,
including case numbers and movement
numbers as well as the watchmaker’s
private marks.
The type of books they were in the
habit of borrowing from public libra
ries is told, and all librarians warned
to be on the lookout for them.
Typical of the detailed description
of each of the three are the following
sentences from the description of
Roy:
“Wears glasses in reading. Eyes
peculiar looking, narrow and squinty,
light brown. Face broad at cheek
bones. Nervous and a ‘dreamer.’ Likes
to argue against the Bible. Long,
turned-up nose and prominent nos
trils. Boastful and egotistical. Clips
his words. Forward and presuming
with women,” etc.
Likes to / rgue.
Both twins are described as fond of
arguing. “They like to argue, partic
ularly on the B'ble, and they were in
the habit of using big words and long
phrases in their conversation, very
often making improper use of them.
They liked to dress well and sought
the company of girls of the better
class. Roy was fond of playing check
ers.”
Then is given a list of the books
they liked to read. Of the poetry they
liked to recite and the songs they lik
ed to sing, “Blessed Assurance” and
“Bringing in the Sheaves” are two.
There is one feature of the char
acter of Hugh, however, that is not
consciously noted by the postoffice in
spectors in their descriptions. He is
a humorist. %
For his list of aliases is given as
follows: “Alias Hugh DeKay, alias
Hugh DeLerious, alias Hugh DeCoy.”
The crime was committed three
years ago. Postoffice inspectors be
lieve they have one of the brothers in
the suspect at Douglas and they are
confident they eventually will get all
three of them.
A certain well-known phrase needs
revising. It should read:
“The postoffice inspectors always
get their man.” !
